This 3-day/2-night trip (or the optional 4-day/3-night version) will travel to Coyote Flats just southwest of Bishop CA. Coyote Flats sits at about 10,500' so it should be nice daytime temps and cool nights. Coyote Flats used to serve our US Military for high altitude landing/take-off/tough & goes; the airstrip still remains although is fenced off.
This area is the last large tract of land open to vehicles in the Eastern Sierra. Views to the west of the John Muir Wilderness is truly breathtaking. We will explore the general area on Saturday including a mine site, small lakes which are good for fishing and several of the 4x4 trails. I plan to bring my fly fishing gear including float tube if anyone else is game that'd be great.
All meet together in Bishop at Jacks Cafe, Main Street/Hwy 395 at 12:00PM/Noon on Friday January 31, 2009. Then drive up to Coyote Flats.
OPTIONAL 4-DAY: (assuming there are others besides myself that want to do this trip extension).
I will lead a second group into the Sweetwater Mountain range, due east of Walker CA, on Thursday July 30, 2009. We will camp at approximately 10,000' high in the Sweetwater range and leave Friday morning to meet the others in Bishop.
Leave Reno date: Thursday July 30, 2009.
Leave time: 8:00AM
Leave location: South end of the Walmart parking lot on Damonte Ranch Parkway.
Trail rating into the Sweetwater Mountain range: Class II & III.
