So I looked up the weather and it will be down to 20 degrees Saturday night. I'm not equipped to camp with the kids in that kind of weather so we are likely going to get a motel in Ely that night. Anyone have any suggestions on a motel?
I remember a Motel 6 in Ely, but not sure if it's still open. I stayed there once and the memory I have is that all the beds were 6 inches too short. It was weird and like a Motel for midgets.
If I were you, I'd push on to Beaver Utah. Nice selections of Motel chains there.
Or, Salina, Utah has a very decent and cheap Rodeway Inn we took refuge at once in similar circumstances. Has an indoor pool for kids and free waffles for breakfast. It's right where you would hop on I-70. Has a good Mexican food place just across the street.
That will add a bit to your first day, but without having to camp or make food, it about balances out. The road from Great Basin to I-15 in Utah seems pretty endless at the end of a long drive, just be aware.

I spend quite a bit of time in Ely (mom was born there) hunting, fishing, camping etc. Bristlecone Pine, Copper Queen, or The Prospector. All are decent. There is a new La Quinta too that is supposed to be really nice (relative term in Ely). For food, not much to choose from. Hotel Nevada has a decent burger and breakfast.
Silver Jack's in Baker has cabin-style accommodations. I thought about staying there, but camped instead. Doesn't look too bad. There is a place that rents airstream artsy sort of places.
The Border right at the UT/NV is decent.....All of the above is if you want to hit the Caves....
Thanks for everyone's help! So pumped for the trip! We got a motel in Ely that will fit the whole group and we are doing the Lehman Caves on Sunday. There is so much to do and see. Wish we had more time.
2,336 miles and got back last night. Went out 50 and back 80. I'd do it again that way too. 50 is more interesting but a bit more taxing with all the passes. At the end of a long trip, you just want to get home, so 80 is a bit quicker and easier.
Thanks for everyone's help! I'll do up a trip report once I get all the pics together. Here's a teaser.
