Well I guess it's time to replace the lovely reconditioned "Edmonds" batteries that were in my 81 when I bought it. Monday morning, and again this morning (Wednesday), they were just dead enough for it not to start. Oddly enough it started fine on Tuesday morning though.
I phoned Polar battery this morning, and they suggested a 12" Group 27 "Jonhson Controls" battery, 730 cc with 160 min. reserve. They are $100 each, with a club discount of $10 off that.
The existing batteries are 10", but 12" long would fit in the factory trays.

Any other suggestions?

So far so good for the Globelite RV batteries I put in the 74. They're group 27 - 675CCA, 850CA. The RVs apparently have bigger plates than the regular starting batteries, and are classed as a deep cycle/starting battery.

They start it better than the Red tops it came with, and seem to deal better with being left for longer periods of time without being started. The truck has sat as long as 6 weeks and flashed right up (the red tops wouldn't do that). Also started right up when we hit -10.

So far I'm happy with them. I bought 4 of them, 2 for me, 2 for Greg B, and the out the door total was $457. That was at Polar, so it might be worth asking about them.

dont get deep cycle batteries unless you want to replace them in 2 years, there is a reason they have thicker plates and fewer of them, I have an optima red top and it has been awsome , you put it in and forget it's there.

Not all deep cycle batteries are created equal. Take a look at the long thread on them in the diesel section. I needed a set quick for the new rig so just picked up the biggest ones I could fit in the tray from Walmart. The JDM ones in my old rig keep on working just fine - even at -25.

Don't forget to get a "right" and a "left" if you have stock cabling. I put in Exide group 27 and group 27F 2 years ago - no issues. Don't remember price.

G'luck, -Steve

Jeff, I just picked up two of the same batteries from Polar this morning for $80 each. They are for the other rig. Guess I got a volume discount on top of the club discount. The list price is $135 each. That's a pretty decent club discount. I also picked up a marine lighter receptical. They were only $5.00 each. It sure beats Crappy Tire's price of almost $20 for one. I got the last one but more stock is coming in next week. If anyone is near their shop before the next club meeting and would do me the favor of picking up 4 of them, I would appreciate it.

I went to Polar as well. BTW- don't let the guy there put 'em in for you, or at least assure he removes both before putting the new ones in! (moron!)

Guess you saw sparks flying, eh? A lot of people - even professional mechanics - have zero undestanding of a 24V system from two 12V batteries in series. Anyways, they are for my other rig, so the only thing he did was put them in the back of my truck.

Interstate batteries
MTP27 and MTP27F are $138ea (sugg retail $151.95)
CCA 750
CA 940
RC min 135
30 month free replacement warranty
battery enviro fee $5ea

Odyssey batteries all the way. I have run them for around 3 years. -25 ice fishing or leaving the lights on 24 hours all sorts of stuff just over 2.5 months storage starts right up. Love these batteries. but expensive they were recommended to me by a search and rescue type crew from the kootnays. And after the amount of time I've had them I'd buy them again.

I believe the Sears Diehard Platinum is a rebadged Odyssey, rumour has it that Sears is selling them cheaper.

Globlites get my vote anyday. They lasted almost 10 years in my BJ42, and the last 5 years I didn't swap them from side to side, and just really gave up maintanence on them, which probably is what killed the one that exploded, think it was low on fluid, excess fumes built up and probably because of a dirty terminal caused a spark and boom! Anyway when I was down for Cruiser days Polar sold me new ones but they are renamed now, because they were called something else in the US. The ones I got off Norm are still ticking well in my parts truck and worked awsome for Jim when he needed them for his truck for a while and then again my truck when I had the explosion.
Cheers,

I've run the Kirkland Costco batteries, they're cheap, good warranty, and easy to get
-25 starts in Alberta - no problem
as long as your charging system is working, any battery will work fine

I had a 12v lawn tractor battery in my FJ62 when I first bought it. It was in there due to front end damage but it started perfect every time. I left it in there all winter to see what would happen. No problems with it. We still use it in the shop.

garry b. is a 6v battery guy, ask him

I've had an interstate megatron in my FJ40 since a few months after I bought it in 2001. One battery system with cold weather and occasional winch use and still going strong. No complaints :meh:.
