So, I've had my rig for 26 years, got it as a project to work on with my dad/brothers just before I turned 16. I've more recently actually started to take it wheeling (KTTR '22, CRR '23, GSMTR '24). I've been through engines (x5), carburetors (x2), seats (x2), and countless other important things(xxx).

Spent the weekend adding a new to me (ty @84Landie) Auburn Max Lock (lunchbox locker, discontinued in '21) in the rear of my truck.

I think I managed 6 miles, and sheared all 4 pins...needless to say I'm disappointed to have wasted $60 in the "good" gear oil just to dump it a day later with metal bits in it.

I called Auburn, they tried, but to be honest, the product had been discontinued and no real support.

So the question I have: is this a sign from the 'cruiser gods to to stay open/open until I put in selectable or just a bad rap, and time to measure pins for replacement from the hardware store?

You have at best 2 holes that would take new pins. Might be able to weld up the others and mill in new holes for pins

I think those pins are hardened. I doubt you'll find something similar at a hardware store. I wonder if those pins are the same dimensions as the other lunch boxes. A lockrite, aussie locker or a powertrax locker are pretty good for what they are. Cheap, effective and noisy. Selectable locker are more refined and expensive.

A Detroit locker is a big step up from a lunchbox. Not as big a step as a selectable. Mine has been trouble free for many years. I love it

I've run a Detriot in the rear for decades. Its been great, trouble free and quite. Arb in the frt .

I have nothing to add except after reading the title, I thought the first lines in the thread would be “Vaminos, Vaminos!”

Clutch; Electric worry.

Regarding the Detroits, I would like to go that way, but this one was free so I thought "why the hell not" ...now I know, back to open/open for me.

Lunchboxes are cheap and effective. They work. i ran one for yrs. They're just not near as refined, and will make strange and loud noises. Powertrax are not as bad.
