For the less than 5 minutes you spend to drop the spare, you'll have a lot more room to get to the shock mounts.

After spending about 6 hours installing rear shocks yesterday, I'm going to call that a "2 Banana" job. :)

Dropping the spare definitely helped, but I needed a Sawzall to remove the upper shock bolts, not even Kroil could break those nuts free. The lowers were effortless and rust-free. Go figure.

The worst part was definitely the upper wrench access... Trying to hold that 10mm stud in place while only getting maybe 10-degrees of rotation on the main nut was rediculous. I had to flip the wrench each time just to get the flats to line up again. I think it was something like 50-75 turns & flips per shock....

The end result was worth it, but they are definitely an order of magnitude more aggravating to install than the front shocks!

22mm and thaks for the correction...so much for iirc when CRS strikes...

..(iirc) GearWrench with flexible box end works OK...it's still a bit of a lack of clearance PITA.

Lots of different sizes quoted from 29 to 24. Anyone got the scoop for real on a 98 model year?

Mines a 2001, so that's all I can speak to.

Lower shock bolt is 17mm
Upper shock bolt stud (the one you need to hold to prevent spinning of the shock body) is 10mm
Upper shock main nut is >19mm. My combo metric wrench set only goes to 19mm and that was too small. I settled on a 7/8" SAE wrench which was just about perfect. That works out to just a touch over 22mm....

Thanks, I have yet to look at mine. the fronts are bigger than 22, probably 23 or 24. My 22 wont fit and my 24 is a little loose. I just wanted to make sure before I dropped 30 bucks on a flex head ratchet box wrench
