For the less than 5 minutes you spend to drop the spare, you'll have a lot more room to get to the shock mounts.

After spending about 6 hours installing rear shocks yesterday, I'm going to call that a "2 Banana" job.
Dropping the spare definitely helped, but I needed a Sawzall to remove the upper shock bolts, not even Kroil could break those nuts free. The lowers were effortless and rust-free. Go figure.
The worst part was definitely the upper wrench access... Trying to hold that 10mm stud in place while only getting maybe 10-degrees of rotation on the main nut was rediculous. I had to flip the wrench each time just to get the flats to line up again. I think it was something like 50-75 turns & flips per shock....
The end result was worth it, but they are definitely an order of magnitude more aggravating to install than the front shocks!
