Baffling, random dead battery

Been battling an electrical problem for about 3 years now. (BTW - truck is a '99 LX-470 with 232K and all original except starter, fuel injector and an axle seal).

In the fall of 2009, my wife called saying that the battery was dead because my son was listening to the radio for about 20 min. Got a jump start and everything was fine for a few weeks and then, another no-start. I cleaned all the connections and didn't have problems for a few months but then, seemingly at random, the truck wouldn't start and needed a jump. around June 2010, i replaced the battery and all has been well up until about 4 weeks ago. Two separate times I thought that the battery went dead rather quickly. once, with the key on (to move the power seat around) while installing a seat cover for my wife, it didn't have enough juice to restart and recently, she was reading a book with the dome light for about a 1/2 hour. These seem pretty logical, battery with diminished capacity.

Checked voltage after letting it sit overnight and it was 12.66. Seems well within the range. Took all the connections apart and cleaned them and applied a little anti-corrosion jelly (wasn't really corroded but I fig it can't hurt).

HOWEVER, last week, she went out in the AM to pick my son up from school, drove home, parked in the garage for about 30 min, came out and it was dead.

I talked her through using my meter and the battery was 11.9v. She said that the alternator light never came on. Charged it up and it's been fine ever since. On Sat, while I was home, i checked -

Battery Load Test at Advance Auto - 600CCA (rated at 700) and voltage ok.
Held a meter on while starting, it starts so quick that it's hard to even see a reading but all I saw flash was 10.9v for the lowest. Seems ok.
Alternator, while battery was pretty full was 13.88v.

So, the alternator light comes on with the key so it's definitely got a good bulb. How can the battery discharge w/out seeing that light? In my experience, alternators don't randomly not charge either. They work or they don't.

Is there any other possibility of something drawing down the circuit that hard while the key if off? I know that the interior light cutout circuit does work properly and shuts down the lights if the doors are left open. The last time, a new battery made the problem go away, but before I go purchase one, I'd like to know if others have had a similar experience or have any other ideas.

Thanks?

A few similar symptom threads here for the searching...

Anyway I'd put an amp meter in between the + terminal and check your parasitic draw. First question: Do you have an aftermarket anti-theft/alarm system and/or remote start? Not likely but check your serpentine belt/belt tensioner it might be allowing slippage at the alt at speed?

If the alt, the battery and the connections check out it has to be a higher than normal parasitic draw.

Nothing aftermarket, 100% original truck.

You would think draw, but the randomness is what is getting me. How can the truck sit overnight and still be at 12.66v and then be started, driven 8 miles, brought home and be 11.9v and sitting for 30 min? And, it's driven every day and this has happened 2-3 times over a period of several months. It's sat much longer periods with no problems whatsoever.

The only other ideas is that there is a brake-controller and I think that when we went to pull the popup recently, it didn't light up. Maybe a short popped the fuse and it's randomly touching and pulling the battery down?

Agreed...if the change in battery status is sudden then a short could be the culprit. But you'd think a short would just blow the fuse...never heard of a short that wouldn't take a fuse out but keep shorting...or burn a wire up.

Or possibly a bad cell in the battery where vibration causes it to short but not show up on a bench test?

Wheeled with a guy not too long ago that had this type of problem. We focused on the alternator as the culprit but it did turn out to be a bad battery that just got worse over time. His was a red top...

Thanks. Well, that was my thought last time... That maybe a plate was loose or cracked and a bump caused the battery plate to shift. I just thought that I would get more time than that. It's been about 32 months. Its an Exide from BJ's Wholesale which I think is decent but maybe I need to buy one from AutoZone / Advance / Sears, etc. I always thought that lead-acid batteries were pretty generic and no real advantage from one brand to another.

Go with the Die Hard Platinum, its the last battery you will every buy.

I agree it's most likely a bad battery with a internal, intermittent short. I'd stick with name brand batteries. The November, 2012 issue of Consumers Report rates batteries in several sizes, if you're into that. Sears batteries are on sale on-line right now, but I'm not necessarily endorsing them. The 27F Diehard Gold seems to be about the right size and the Platinums are on sale on-line too

I just had one die within two years of its purchase. They did swap it out for a new one, no charge. Still for a $200 battery it's a bit disappointing.

This may sound odd but check your lighter socket. Friend of mine had something similar, after months of searching we found a penny in the socket. My theory is it would rattle around and only discharge from time to time.

I chased some similar electrical issues recently. Turns out, in my case, my positive battery cable was corroded. Very little evidence on the terminal but when I peeled back the insulation, the corrosion had wicked back about 7 inches. Replaced the cable and all is right with the world again.

Dealing with the same issue right now. Have a Sears Diehard Plat and there are random times when it just goes flat out dead. Bought a Noco jumper so my wife doesn't get stranded. Have already replaced the battery once under warranty. Oddest thing...

Will be checking my + cable tonight and also taking my USB charger out of the lighter socket as well just in case...

Battery is like going bad. I had a very similar situation - random dead battery, get a jump and it would be fine again for a random number of days.

Get a new battery and your problems will go away.

I had the random dead battery happen twice. One cause was a failed door lock actuator that the car kept trying to lock. The other was a failed driver door courtesy switch, which caused the headlamps and interior lights to act crazy.

I also went through this with my Tahoe. About once a week my battery would be completely dead. Tested for everything under the sun and it always checked out. Even took the battery to advanced auto where I had bought it 6 months prior. They tested it and of course it tested ok. Said there was nothing they could do. I went ahead and bought a replacement and have not had an issue since. Even in 0* weather no issues.

Moral of the story, sometimes it's as simple as a bad cell or circuit internal to battery like others have mentioned.
