Bad rear axle bearing?

I installed an Ausie Locker in the rear of my 85 FJ60 last night.
When I pulled the axles, they appear to have come out with the Bearing/seals attached to the axle.
The axle was just a big open hole.
I thought it was normal until I looked at the FSM and see there should be a tight little hole there.

I assume that this means I need to replace the axle bearings and seal.
SOR has a kit for 82$ with the bearings/seals/washers/c-clips.
Am I on the right track? Any better source for the kit?

Also the DS Axle outside end was frozen onto the brake drum and would not separate. Does this just require a firm smack?

Everything went back together OK but I want to take care of it.
Thanks

The axle bearing is pressed into the rear axle housing, not onto the axle shaft. If the bearing did come out with the axle then something is wrong. You did see the bearing on the shaft? Bearing quality is all about who the manufacturer. You'll need to get that information from SOR.

Regarding the DS axle, do you mean the brake drum is frozeon onto the wheel studs or the end of the axle? If so, make sure you have adjusted in the brake shoes for clearance, then use a hammer, heat, or what ever it takes to brake the drum free.

And don't try prying the drum off using the backing plate, all you end with is a bent up backing plate.

This stuff is pretty tough. I replaced my Toyota axle with something else last year, it had around 350K on it and showed no signs of excessive wear on either the bearings or the shafts. I have to think that replacing the clips is pointless, same with the washers unless they show signs of wear or they measure under the specified minimum. Your locker may have come with new stuff anyway. Just because something is new, it doesn't mean its better. New often means Chinese. I'd rather keep the used Toyota stuff. And yes, if your bearing came out with the shaft, you have a problem.

The bearings can't be correct if they came off with the axle shafts.

Are they pressed on the axle shafts? Seems like the bearing would move around a little in the axle housing which could be bad. I would check it out and maybe install some new bearings. Do the rear tires spin smooth with everything bolted back together with them lifted off the ground.

Sounds like we need some pictures.

I agree, I was way focused on the Aussie install, just pulling the axle out 3in. and didnt really notice the Bearings. When I referenced the FSM it was obvious that the small hole in the bearing was not what I was seeing. I was seeing the full axle hole. So I assume the bearing/seal came off with the axle/wheel.
Everything pushed back together OK and seems fine.

I need to pull the locker/c-clips to get back to it. So I will probably order the SOR kit so I have something to work with once I have it apart again.

I'll get some pics then.

No, what i recall seeing was the full open axle housing- no bearings.
The tires spin fine and it drives fine. There is a little periodic sound, whum-whum-whum, on the road. Cant really tell where from. Not loud.

Guess i just need to take apart again and see what I have.

Thanks to all.

Normally the axle bearings are seated tight into the axle housing. To remove the bearing you need to pound it out with a slide hammer, or something similar. I felt like I was going to pull my truck off the jack stands when I was replacing mine. Therefore if they slid right out, something is wrong. Also, I don't know how you could have reinstalled the axle seal properly if it was stuck on the axle with the bearing. Good luck.
