I'm repairing my frame now and was thinking about welding up all of the holes (even the ones that are supposed to be there) and putting a few quarts of used motor oil to slosh around in there and keep the rust from setting in.

any thoughts on that?

Oh and my rear shock bar broke the first week after I bought my "rust free" 60. So join the club... we have tee-shirts :D

Mine went the first time on the way to connecticut, on the highway. It took out my rear brake line and I noticed when pulling up to a toll plaza. THAT was scary.

I got it *fixed* and it broke again on the way home. Make sure whoever is doing the work already has a good rep with YOU, not anyone else, especially relatives.

hi iceneweb ,i am the cruiser guy that you met at ikea to get the tires from , i have a simalar problem with my rear shock tower tube , i am buying a mig welder and will be re welding another tube in in the next little while my frame is not swiss cheese ( yet ) but the tube was , if you are looking for a frame to swap out there was one for sale on bc4x4 for 400$ or you can just weld in new steel untill you feel its strong enough . if you dont have the time or want to goto that much work you can get steve at extreme bends ( now ebi ? ) a call he will look at it for free and at least tell you if it is worth doing or not , if you want to part it out i would be interested in it as my father is looking for a 60 or somthing simalar right now !

Woah, i seem to have set off a landslide of dodgy frame confessions .. . .

One of the problems i have is that i need to use the truck to tow a trailer this summer and i am uneasy about doing it with a welded up frame, so i am 90% in favour of selling it whole for parts. I am going to take some pictures and video and put together an ad'.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Mark

Mine broke, i ordered a used replacement from www.cruiserparts.com. As suggested by folks on this forum, used a 2inch hole saw to cut out what was left. inserted new parts and welded. total cost was 100 for parts, 20 for hole saw, 17.99 for case of beer(after repairs completed)

Don't scrap it for a 120 fix

What is (if any?) the differences between the FJ,BJ, and HJ frames? Are they all the same? Could someone with a US FJ-60 use a BJ, or HJ frame? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Zack

Yes, if you are willing to relocate engine mounts. I've heard, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but arn't the FJ60 and HJ60 the same even with mounts?

If you want an HJ60 frame they are plentiful here in Central America.

Iceneweb: All is not lost if you want a local solution, though it sounds like this may be more work then you want. Here are examples of Japanese frames we've sold from parted out trucks. Typically very little rust, with perhaps some minor layering starting to happen at the rear where the two layers are rivited together. Sometimes there is none at all. The rest of the frames typically are 100%. Motormounts would need changing if you are moving to B from H/F series, and you need to weld in spacers for the LHD PS pump (holes are already there, though in some instances clockig needs changing a little). Many times we can supply the body with the frame if you are looking for patch panels.

We can supply just the frame, frame and body, or frame/body/axles. It's a viable option if you know your engine/tranny and want to solidify the foundation.

These two are ending up under BJ60's in BC. One has been POR'd and the other just had the body removed.
