*bit of an update*

I have decided to do the head gasket on the "new" motor before I drop it in the truck. Hopefully I can pull off this repair, I have never done anything like this before. So far it is going really well. I think I am going to do the following maint. while I have the motor out:
HG
Re-seal oil pans
Oil pump seal
rear main seal
front crankshaft seal
Clean out oil cooler
inspect timing chain
new water pump (already have a new OEM one from previous owner)
clean/paint block and make it look nice.

Thank goodness for Ih8mud community and the factory service manual!

i have the HG dvd if you want to borrow it if i can find it....

Always a good idea to do maintenance while the engine is out.
Do you need an engine stand? swing by if you need it. It's just sitting there.

just as an FYI for you 1FZ guys. You can still get, or at least could when I bought mine, a OEM short block from Toyota. Reasonably priced for what you are getting....Toyota motor (not rebuilt) to factory specs.

Yea, I need to put more updates on here. I want to do a build thread, but I barely have time to do this proejct let alone do a build thread for it. Anyway, the old engine and trans are out, and I am stripping the parts I need of the old engine. The new engine is 1/2 way through the rebuild, i am picking the head up from the machine shop today. I hope to have the head on and finish the new motor rebuild within the next 2 weeks or so.

Can we have the next HAMOM at my house ??.... lol

Can we have the next HAMOM at my house ??.... lol
Next HAMOM on the books is May 28, the weekend between GSMTR and Hurricane Creek. We'll be fixing and preparing stuff then, and I doubt you want to wait that long. Throw out a couple of possible dates and we'll get rolling on it. The Lowcountry Boil is 4/22-24 and the ONSC Spring Tide Ride is the following weekend, but I'm not sure if anyone is going. Glad to help, let us know

Thanks , I partly kidding about the HAMOM... I can handle all the work, I am just a bit overwhelmed by the whole project and all that I have yet to do. I am less than 60 days away from GSMTR and my motor is on the floor of my garage with no head on it. So I just need to get my but in gear and find the time to get this back together. I work slower than most because I am not just repairing but restoring - I am cleaning and painting everything as I put it back together, along with replacing any maintenance items w/ OEM stuff, so everything I do takes twice as long as a normal person. Hopefully the end result will be nice.

Been a long time since the last update. I got the engine rebuild done finally! Then a neighbor helped me drop in in last weekend. Now to hook everything backup and get this bitch running. Sadly, it will not be done in time for GSMTR :( The rebuild went fairly well, and I have been working steadily on the project, but unfortunately several setbacks cost me several weeks of lost time. These things happen when your're trying to source parts for a 20 year old truck :/ . Anyway , hopefully i'll have it running for the next get-together.

Rebuild complete!

Dropping new motor in:

Congratulations. Looks good.

Man, I wish my engine were that clean! You'll have her back on the road before you know it. Sorry you won't make this trip, but there are plenty more this year! Mostly overlanding stuff that won't ruin your beautiful paint job!

Good to see it going back together.

update! I started it up for the first time over the weekend. it ran like crap - very high idle and a weird chugging sound.

I cracked the idle air control valve when I was putting the motor back in ( engine hoist pushed up against it) so I just ordered another one. hopefully that fixes the problem. I will try my very best to make it to the next club meet.

That sounds right, any air leak will make it idle high.
