Here's another option for a relocated backup camera. Rather than try to adapt the Slee camera bracket, I moved the backup camera to the interior trim, just inside the rear lift gate. The wiring was easy to deal with, and the modification to the trim was relatively minor.
The result is not ideal, but definitely better than no backup camera at all. Having the camera inside may give some benefit to keeping it clean and getting a clear view, in as much as the rear window is clear. The high mount may also may give some additional perspective as well.
1. Remove the upper rear interior trim.
2. Pop the weather seal boot running between the lift gate and the roof.
3. Find the white + green stripe sheath (this runs into the lift gate to the backup camera) and cut it back inside the boot.
4. Pull the trimmed end of the sheathed camera wire bundle back out into the roof (leave the cut wire in the lift gate side where it is).
5. Splice an extension of the four wires (white, black, red, bare) over to the big hole in the roof.
6. Splice the plug you removed from the backup camera (described here
Slee's new Backup Camera Bracket Install).
7. Carefully cut out a slot in the trim in the location of the big hole with the camera plug in it. Test fit and trim only as needed for a snug fit.
8. Apply some double sided trim adhesive strips and insert the camera. It should be nice and solid.
9. You'll have to trim off some unneeded plastic on the big plug to get it to fit up inside the hole in the roof. Do this, then plug it in, push it up in the hole, and reattach the trim. If you were careful it should look OK from the outside.
The angle on the camera could be better, as the lower half of the screen shows the interior cargo bay. I may go back and shim up the camera inside the trim to mitigate this, I may not. I can see up high by looking over my shoulder, and the camera shows things below the tailgate, which is what I needed.
