Backlash in drive line!! Worth fixing???

Are you referring to the clunk when shifting out of park into everything but neutral? If so. absolutely normal. If not, we need more info on what's going on.

Yep, nature of the beast. I converted to part time 4x4. No more clunk.

Yeah, in park on level ground the 80 will roll back and forth a good 4-6 inches. You will put your mechanic's kids through college trying to fix it.
 
what causes this exactly? i thlught it was my driveline u-joints. is it something else? t/c? or what. i hate it when mine does it, makes me feel like somethings about to break.
 
The backlash is caused from worn diffs, including t/c centre diff and slip yokes, It won't break on you just piss you off, sounds like every1 just put up with it

The backlash is caused by tolerences in the gears in the t-case, diffs, birfield joints... The T-case is the main source, and you can eliminate most of it by converting to part time.
 
would removing the front driveshaft work? I am considering this until I can make it into part time. Working on the engine first though.
