B for 3B Diesel swap in BJ40

An issue I ran into when using the 70 series bell housing was getting the starter to fit. I ended up going with a 60 series starter which sticks up which then interfered with the steering box. I had to go to a 60 series steering box. I shifted my motor forward 3 inches because I used the 70 series top plate and wanted the shifter in the original position. Hopefully this isn't an issue for you.
Yes - the 40 series steering box is right in the way! I had to put this engine in and pull out 4 times and ultimately could only get it in if I removed the BJ60 (3B) 24V starter. That starter is huge with the gear reduction and unfortunately the teeth are not compatible with the B flywheel. I was planning to put in power steering however was hoping to make that a future project... guess I need to do it now. This project grows larger by the day... lol!

Hang in there @Bennyboy ATX the road is tough, but it'll be worth it!

I have the 70 series bellhousing and don’t have any clearance issues with the starter and 40 power steering box. I’ll compare tonight with yours and see if anything stands out.

You shouldn’t need to swap the water pump just to get a smaller fan diameter. Toyota used all sorts of fan and clutch combinations on cruisers and other diesels that should bolt to the 3B pump. I know LN series Hilux fans are a smaller diameter. Just my opinion, but if you’re going through all the trouble to make up a trans mount just bite the bullet and go to an H55f and split case. As mentioned you could even move the engine forward a few inches which would solve a lot of the clearance issues (including more room for a turbo if you ever want to go that way)

Too late for me now but I would be interested in how you got the 70 series bell housing to work with the starter and steering box. I tried several different starters. The 60 series starter was the only one I could get to bolt up. I also used a 85/86 BJ70 bellhousing. All this so I could have the tachometer pickup on the bell housing!

If you go to 60 series steering box that requires a change to the relay rod and and reaming of one of the tie rod ends (TRE) to accept the 60 series TRE from the relay rod parts.

One caution about moving the motor forward a couple of inches puts the oil pan right overtop of the front differential. This caused be to flip my front springs to then move the axle forward.

Ok so last night I called @Beachmobile and he directed me to Dan Partz in BC Canada. Dan says that you have to use a late model 83-86 BJ40 cast iron BELL housing that came EOM with a 3B motor. It also has its own 24v starter that is more vertical and doesn't hit the steering box. I think Dan has solved my 2 biggest problems thus far.... Crossing my fingers this will work. I'll post pics when the parts finish their journey from BC to Texas!!

@John in Utah Dan told me that the 3B water pump/clutch fan centerline is offset from the B... otherwise you have to rework the radiator fan shroud. Thus requiring pull off the 3B water pump, clutch and larger diameter fan and using all B parts.

for clarity - the issues you are having are from trying to put a 3B from a bj70 into a bj40?

- the folks sold you a 3B from a bj70 instead of a 3B from a BJ60?

Per Craig at Cruiserparts.net the 3B he sent me is from an 85 or 86 BJ60.

Apologies Robert, I was remembering wrong. I in fact have a late model cast BJ42 bellhousing and H55f mated to a 70 series 3B. I remember because I was disappointed I didn't have the tach pick up and had to use one off the alternator instead.

The wp pulley centerline is offset from the crank pulley on both the B and 3B. I admit I don't have a B to compare to but just looking at your previous pictures it looks like the B wp is offset as close as to make no difference. Is your fan shroud diameter offset to the LH side? If you want I can take measurements of mine with the 3B in my 40 for you to compare, but it's mounted to a FJ40 radiator and I'm not sure if that changes things.

Hopefully Bennyboy gets the parts sorted out. I had an error in my last post. It should be a 70 series relay rod (60 series would be too long).

I'm surprised the B bellhousing wouldn't bolt up to the 3B. I had a 3B from a 85/86 70 series I sold to a friend which was mated to a B - bellhousing and transmission. I kept the 70 series bellhousing and mated to my Bj42 3B. Wonder if components of the starter could be swapped to have it work with the flywheel.
