I'm looking for an engine rebuild kit for my '80 BJ40. I live in the US and I know I will have to ship it in from Canada or beyond. Since most of you guys seem to be from north of the border I bet someone has a pretty good idea of where I can get stuff for my BJ. Any recommendations? I hate Spector Off-Road so please don't even mention them. Also, If you have any info. on building or buying a turbo for my "B" engine I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Try 4wheelauto for the rebuild kit.

For info on turbos, search the diesel forum. Lots of info there.

If your "B" engine is tired and you're interested in a turbo as well why not just call your local engine importer and order up a 13B-T direct from Japan. It will bolt to what you currently have including motor mounts tranny rad etc. etc. and it will give you the turbo as well. You'll need to special order no doubt since they won't have folks falling over each other to get one in AL!
I've rebuilt a 3B and the rebuild kit was nearly $1000 landed from Oz, the machine shop work was about $2000. I also had the injectors done for $50 each and injection pump looked at for about $500 or so. An AXT turbo kit will ba about $3000. As you can see the costs start to add up quickly not to mention that the truck is out of commission while the engine is being done!
You can swap in a 13B-T in a day or so.

This is definitely the place to come for answers! The "B" rebuild kit costs $1500 from 4wheel auto not including the machine shop work etc... I'm unfamiliar with the 13B-T but it sounds like a winner. Since that's a newer engine, does it possibly use a 24/12V electrical system? I'd love to be able to buy 12v accessories (ex. lightbulbs) at my local parts store rather than pay Spector Off-Road an absolutely absurd amount of money for 24v stuff.

Call or email Gand S cruiser parts in Vancouver for some info. Most are 24v, but I think they can source the 12v stuff for it.

You can get it to be a 12v engine if you want to badly enough. You'd need the starter and altenator from a Canadian BJ60 which were 12v, or better yet when you order up the engine see if you can request 12v! Personally since the truck is already 24v I wouldn't bother to convert though. You should be able to get 24v stuff from your local truck dealers though as most heavy trucks are 24v.

Since 12v is the standard here I assumed the big rigs used 12v accessories, lights etc... I'm going to check out some trucks stops just in case. I don't plan to swap the 24v system but 12v would have been one less headache. As far as the 13B-T, I've read about it on several web sites and now I really want one. However, they're very expensive and rare. I can spend $4000US+ for one that's in who-knows-what shape or I can rebuild my ass-less wonder "B" for $2500? and know what I have. It's a slight dilemna. Fortunately I'm several months out from doing anything. I have a buddy moving to Japan. I'll see if he can find me a 13B from a reputable source at a reasonable price. Fat chance huh? Everyone's advice was helpful. Thank you.

I doubt you'll have your "B" rebuilt for $2500. Remember it's a 13B-T NOT a 13B that you want, they are different engines. The 13B is NOT turbocharged. Most of the ones you get here are Japanese takeouts with under 100,000kM's. The 3B that's going into my '67 FJ45LV had compression at 400+ on all holes cold.

Worth or cost??

I paid about $2000 US for a 3BII will all accessories. The 13B-T would have been about 2X that. Remember though that this is in Central America NOT Canada/USA!

What should I expect to pay for a Japan 13b-t delivered to Canada? Thx

THAT is a question for the engine importer nearest you!!

Having done this, it isn't cheap. Expect the shipping and the associated fees to equal or exceed the cost of the engine itself. I brought mine into the US, but I would expect similar fees into Canada. You'll have Japan crating fees, trucking fees, ocean freight, import duty, local shipping, and possibly broker fees as well. When all of that is said and done, you still have to deal with the actual conversion fees. Many have said it before, do it because you want it, not because you plan on recouping your investment with increased mileage, etc.
AND, you are buying an unverified motor unless you go through someone who will take the risk and test it out for you. Add $$$ for that and it's worth it. Not that I got anything bad, but most people don't want to gamble with that much money invested in a hobby car.

A 3BII is the newer generation of the original 3B. The original had an inline injection pump and sleeved cylinders and the later generation has a rotary pump and bored cylinders among other differences.
