Where can I get axle seal kits in vancouver other than at the dealership.

I also would like to know if I have to engage my front locker before removing axle shafts as my innner seals are leaking and I need to replace them.

One more question, I do not think I am going to replace my trunion bearings and have heard that you can still replace the felt seals by splitting them at the top of the seal. What do you guys think is that a no-no or what?

If I had to do it over again...

Parts from these guys.. http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/index.html - Excellent kit for $87 US... Parts at Toyota dealer are 6X that.

Why not do all the bearings while you are in there... unless you know they are good. Replace the trunions, might as well, A) Your in there... B) They come with the kit. Good time to do wheel bearings as well!

I wouldn't suggest cutting anything, but thats up to you

another place is 4wheelauto out of Edmonton, they charge 225 CAD for all the parts. I don't know how that compares when you bring up from the states with exchange and duty.

it doesn't take that much longer to pull the knuckle assy. if you keep the shims seperated for the top and bottom it will go back together the exact same way. then you don't have to do the whole checking the preload of the knuckle assy. Just as long as you have no movement the shims that are there should be fine.

possibly Rob Millson of LCI in Richmond can get you the parts. The business is called Land Cruiser Industries. If you cannot find the number it is on here somewhere in the International section.

When I open up the housing and see if the trunion bearings are ok but there is only 135k on the truck so I would hope they are alright if not i will replace. The kit from cruiseroutfitters is cheap compared to four wheel parts but I wanted to do it this weekend and I dont think I will get them shipped in time.

Do you guys know if the locker has to be engaged or not?

Ihave tried to get on the birfield site to look at the manuals but cannot get the page to load?

I have a fsm for a pickup and was wondering would the torque values be the same for both vehicles or does the landcruiser have different torque values?

I don't think you would have to engage the locker to do the inner seals. If some one thinks otherwise i would love to know why. By the way just do the trunion bearings while you are in there it will save you in the long run cause you will have to buy the whole kit when your steering stiffens up anyhow. .02

Get the knuckle kit with the trunion bearings. I call them knuckle bearings and do the whole thing and be done with it. It's really not very difficult and your all the way there. just reuse the shims and repack the birfs and wheel. You'll be glad you did. Usually I find the knuckle bearings are more worn than the wheel bearings. It's no big deal to cut the felt if you don't do the whole thing.

oh ya the torques are probably pretty close so just go with them. keep trying birfield and burn a cd with the manuals on it , :bounce: man it rocks

If you have a large standard pinion diff and a factory locker (cable or e-) you absolutely must engage the locker before taking the axle shaft out. The locking gear rides on the axle shaft and if the locker is left open, the gear can fall off the shifter fork and there is no way to put it back short of taking the diff off the axle housing.

Of course this only applies to the side where the locker mechanism is located. So for the front, it is the long axle side. This does not apply to the high pinion e-locker, 8" light duty e-locker, or any aftermarket lockers.

Heavens no. :) LOL.

Seriously, though, experienced Cruiser guys like Rob, Greg, Sheldon, Wayne, and others are very important to us all. Word of mouth helps them out.

We are a small group. Lets face it, except for the JDM (and hopefully Euro/Aussie) models coming in, the number of diesel Cruisers will keep declining.

While many of you do your own work, there are many who just don't have the time or facility & equipment to re & re a transmission for example. How many of you - new guys like me - have attempted to track down a diesel Cruiser expert? I can tell you, they are rare.

If just a few "core" suppliers drop out of business, it will negatively affect us all when it comes time to repair our beloved Cruisers.

What will happen if the Robs and Gregs decide that their labour of love - the Cruiser business - is just not viable as a business and takes up too much of their free time? That's why I will always take the time to recommend the suppliers without whom most of us would be SOL.

My comments are focussed on the BC south coast area. But they apply anywhere Cruiserheads are located.

Finally, I know you are joking on the "take" bit. :)

Sincerely,

Bruce
