I’ve been reading a lot about rebuilding my front axle and all the required SST’s etc. I’ve checked threads that explain why or why not they are needed and ways around it. For all the locals, what have you used in the past that I should know about when rebuilding axles? Can I borrow any of the expensive SST’s that people may have laying around?

I just re-used the shims in there, measured the pre-load and adjusted from there. I like to have it at the upper end of the pre-load rang i think it helps with bigger tires. I have a fish scale it you want to barrow it but they only cost like 10 bucks

I'll grab a fish scale no big deal. Anything I should be careful of when disassembling? The axle is out of the truck and on my side yard. From what I've read the only thing that needs to be watched is which shims come off from where (top or bottom) and to make sure they go back on the same way.

Make sure you have some brass drifts and you'll need some of these...the 54MM socket...I think a 15/16"? will work too. Seal pullers, snap ring pliers...I have some..let me know if you'd like to borrow it. Makes life WAY easier.

Oh, the seal puller you can get at Harbor Freight...cheap!

I have all those tools. Bought them all awhile back in preparation.

Mark,
I will be dropping off the differentials for regearing next week and stopping by your place for the rebuild kit.

Anyone know how Dave's 60 is going? SO far it's all paint and stereo... no REAL hardware.

And Dave didn't even do it himself :flipoff2:

Sounds like SOMEBODY's getting ready for a THROW DOWN!

I'm gonna have to remember to bring the teflon suit to the meeting!;p

I'm not rushing but my goal is to be done before the end of June.

Have fun playing the smog game.:flipoff2:

I'm buying parts this week. I have a lot of trips this month so not much action until the end of April. Then I go into high gear. Axles are torn down, gearing is being sent out and SOA is gonna get crazy.

Why does the SOA take you so long? We do them in one weekend, at a parking lot with help of a bobcat.

HaHa

The first one of these you do is a nightmare-especially if you don't come from years of working on Land Cruisers. I started my FJ40 as a bare frame in November, and finally had it done for a run in May. It's totally normal. The second one I did in 4 days.:D

In Randy's case, he does seem overly optimistic at times, but I think the pace is not unreasonable working by yourself, especially when side tracked by parts trucks and other distractions. Plus, he has to learn all the skills that many in the LC world take for granted.

Don't listen to them, Randy.:flipoff2:

You are right, so what I did when doing my FJ60 was to pair up with my two uncles and cousin who had done a couple before and it made the process a lot easier. Like octavio62 forklift or bobcat helps to get enough clearance under the rig. My advise is to offer free beer and pizza and invite the good LC friends to get the job done in one shot. Also the fact that I gifted my '79 fj40 to my uncle also helps when doing projects. ;) Good luck Randy and have fun man.

I have a busy schedule with work and I travel a lot as a salesman. You must also remember that I've only had my cruiser for about 1 year. Before that I didn't know the name of anything under a hood. I have self taught myself with the help of mud and the local 4x4 group what everything is and does. So I think for someone who has just learned how to work on trucks to going straight into a SOA conversion is a huge push forward.

I will not be set back or derailed. It's only time and I have plenty of it.

When I do have the SOA weekend I will supply food and lots of beverages. I'll make sure people want to be there if only to hang out.
