Had a little Birf incident......................can I save the housing, the Birf seal lip, is damaged, would it be ok to dremel grind the crushed lip off or am I better off building up a new axle off a spare housing?

What say mud?

Run a carbide around it, install a Marlin seal and call it good.

That is really not in that bad of shape Rob. I guess I have salvaged far worse.

Thank you sir, I will have the rest of this Sam Adams for you..........

How did it brake?

Tight turn popped the clutch?

Well Id think that I was clearing the top of Hwy 20 on the Hammers and just ran into a really bad line:cool:

But in reality, I was backing it out of the driveway to load it, thought I was in 2WD low but was really in 4wLow with the hubs locked, and well it went boom......

Not a little boom, not a pop but a huge fricking BOOM.................needless to say I took the 80 for the weekend:mad:

4:1 Orion, H42, 2F, Front and Rear lockers......

;)I have a set of 83 40 knuckles and birfs to put on it next.........maybe some six shooters:p or Lukes weld on set.

Huge meats? I'm a little surprised that alone would blow it up.

33" MTRs, front Detroit, spent some time on Moab slick rock and other stuff, not really digging the Detroit up front but its there till I put a ARB in it and I have a buggy in mind first.
There was a crack in the remaining section of the bell also, so its possible.
Im not really into Longs for a family wheeler that runs 33/35s and various trails around SoCal and Moab. Im thinking of dropping in the 83 40 Birfs and running that till I can go to the large pattern knuckles.

Hey I have seen his driveway its no joke :whoops:

I've had to clean mine a time or two w/ a carbide bit that the stock seal wouldn't even stay in place. The Marlin seal, I'd say, would be mandatory. Unlike the stock seal, his seal has a tight tolerance & will not come out.

I have broke Land Cruiser disc brake front axle shafts on the starter motor....

Hi All:

"Calstyle," those '83 Birfs are the same as mini-truck Birfields. You can send them to Bobby Long and he will do his special heating treating on them - not very expense at all.

For the matter, I thought the 1981-84 40 Series knuckles were large-pattern, like the mini-truck and 60/70 Series knuckles.

Regards,

Alan
