Axe and Shovel mounts for stock rack?

I'm trying to find axe and shovel mounts for the stock roof rack and I can't find anything that will seem to work.

Anyone have any tips or ideas on something that could be used? I already looked through the thread on the high-lift rack but it didn't have any solid information as far as axes and shovels go.

What about a custom fabrication job? you should make somthing that can hold both the shovel and the axe, along with a high-lift jack. my unc's 80 has something like that

I used a Fiskars axe with the head mount it came with, and three Quick Fist Clamps mounted to the rack with hose clamps. I covered the hose clamps with electrical tape so they match the black rack. So far it's been working great. I used both of them last week in the snow.

Here's a picture from the snow last week. The Atrac worked great. I only got stuck once, when the front end sunk in some soft snow. When I stepped out the snow was up above my knee.

i happen to have that fiskars axe. i love that thing, i downed a 40ft tall 10-11in diameter living tree in 5-10 minutes. i'm glad to know i'll be able to mount this very destructive axe on my FJ!

BigBlue, thank for the picts. I think that might be the way to go, quick access and secure mounting, gotta love it.

I'm planning on getting the Gerber Extra Long axe, basically the same as the Fiskars you got there. Glad it's a good choice!

ya i think the gerbers are actually made by fiskars also its just the name u pay more for. i have a few of them there great but im content to leave mine inside my cruiser lol. i dont need a singe more pound to raise my center of gravity in my 80.

if i were you, and had to get one axe, i would get the large axe. my friends got hachets, and critisized me for getting an axe. lol, thne they saw how the fiskars axe cuts. in my hands, i split inch and a half branches in 1-2 swings. (then again i swing like a madman). this is something that would take their hachets multiple swings. to put a disclaimer on my 40ft tree story, i was extremely angry when i cut the tree down, and i was swinging very hard into the tree. it seems that the harder you swing, the deeper the axe goes, it just dosen't seem to slow down at all. however, i will say, on occasion the axe gets in so deep it gets stuck. other than that, get the large axe, all my friends wished they had.

I already put the Gerber Xtra Large axe on order. It's the biggest one they make, like 26-28 inches long.

I'm happy with the Fiskar axe. It cuts great. I'm also happy with the mount although, I am a little concerned about security up there. It's very easy to remove.

Yeah, security could be a concern. But then you could either take the tools off the rack and just stow 'em inside when you park somewhere questionable, or you could wrap a cable lock through the roof rack and around the handle of each tool, just take it off before you go wheeling so they're easily accessable again.

thats the same size as my fiskars axe. if you swing as hard as i do, you'll find out something funny. this thing dosen't just spit out wood bits, it sends chunks flying at your friends. most of my buddies take quite a few steps back and still get hit with tree guts. the dark grey coating on the axe blade(i'm not sure if its on the gerber axes, but it is on the fiskars ones) will be mostly worn off after cutting down a large tree. i kind of liked the 'used' looking to it though.

My buddy and I cut through an 18 inch diameter wind fall last week in about ten minutes. It worked great, there were huge chunks flying everywhere.

i was getting tired halfway through my cut. i wasn't cutting as fast afterwards. cutting down smaller trees is an absolute joke. the first tree i hit was about 3-4in diameter, i made 3 sloppy downward diagnoal cuts. not one was in the same place as the other. i realized oen was very deep. i pushed, the tree went down. my facial expression: now that i'm sold on axes, can anyone recommend a good shovel?

I just got my quick fists today so dad went down to the hardware store. Got a 3ft fiberglass shovel with the grip handle (like BigBlue's but red with a hammer battleship grey blade) and my dad, always thinking, got U bolts and plates instead of pipe clamps. I put up the shovel just now and it doesn't move, period. The u-bolts work GREAT! I'll get some picts of how it works out when my axe gets here on Monday and I put it up. My CB also came in so I gotta get it put in as well. And the best news is my Gobi ladder will be here next week!

I think I tend to prefer the quick grips over anything else because it's a rubber mounting surface which means 1) it won't harm the stock rack and 2) it won't transmit vibrations or rattles.
