i was just reading an article about mercedes armoured limousines. the real high end ones have a PTO type gear off the flywheel that engages at idle. this gear powers another drive that supersedes the drive belt off the main bearing for running the ac compressor, thus ensuring the compressor is turning enough rpms to maintain uniform cool airflow inside.

which is to say maybe the ac compressor on an 80 can only do so much at idle rpm on a hot day with the engine compartment all heated up.

Actually, as our vehicles are all now 10+ years old...note that the cabin air flow from the HVAC fan is increased if you slip the A/T lever into neutral and rev the engine to over 1100 rpms or so (this is to the point about performance while halted at a stoplight or construction zone or whatever).

(Same goes for power window up function. At idle, my driver side window is a creeper. At slight revs or driving away, over 1100-1200 rpms, quicker!)

As always, YMMV. :D

Alternator PTO? You can solve most of this by running some new power wires off the alt to the battery and to the cabin.

hey KillersLC, thanks for this thread. i just installed (not yet wired) a 12.5in fan in the same location as yours, and man is it tight in there. any way i also got mine from a junk yard but for 10 bucks, this unit comes from a 94 mitsubishi montero and is obviously a product from japan (nippon denso), had to cut almost all of the mounting tabs off to fit it in the space. just doing some testing with the a/c and a temp probe, the temp does go down a little (roughly 4-6 degrees) while at idle. will do more tests later.

Cool!

I was poking around junkyards the other day and saw those montero fans--Definitely a better unit than what I have. I just got a tercel fan that should do a bit better job, just waiting to find the time to install it......

If you cut the tabs off, did you have to use the radiator ties? If so, make sure to use some weather stripping so the fan isn't resting right on the condenser.

I glad this could help.....

i left one of the smaller large mounting tabs on it to mount onto the existing horn bracket mount holes (damn thats a mounts). i'll get a pic of it shortly

heres a pic of the unit sorta installed

I just bought a complete set of this foam from my Toyota dealer

It comes attached to a Toyota factory radiator. You can't buy it seperate.. :frown:

I just bought a complete set of that radiator foam from my local Toyota dealer. It's not cheap though. But the salesman was so nice that he threw in a brand spankin new radiator with a new radiator cap since I was griping about how much the foam was costing.

Ahhh the old $300-$400 dollar foam huh?
