Hey Guys,
First post here. Just moved out form Bozeman Montana to Bend Oregon. I've been getting ready fro the Steelhead fishing season and am tuning the 84 FJ60. So here is my first question. I am going to for the first time pop off the tranny oil pan and replace the seal. Hope this is easy..if anyone has a link to any tips that would be great.
Thats actually not the question though...so I went to NAPA today to get the seal and I asked for some tranny fluid. The guy behind the counter swore by Valvoline MAX Life DEX/MERC Automatic Transmission oil. I was like what? He said that was the way to go in the FJ series manual transmissions.

I had my seals replaced last year between the transfer case and tranny because I was having the problem of the two mixing. What do you guys think of using this oil. What if it mixes with the tranfer case fluid? If this this is a whacked idea what do you recomend? I love this forum and hope I hear from a few of you guys about this topic.

Thanks
Todd

You must have a FJ62 and not an FJ60.

The title to your thread is a little missleading.

Nope, he meant manual trans FJ60.

I wouldnt run Auto Tranny fluid in mine...

Hey Guys,
84 FJ60 Manual transmisson.... Thats my rig.....

The guy sold me automatic transmission fluid...yeah sounds crazy. Why would he think this is the way to go?

Manuals don't have pans and seals.

They have a drain plug.

Should be running GL4 90w.

NAPA dude probably thought of an FJ Cruiser.

---That tranny takes 80w-90 GL-5(4 acceptable) Gear oil. Not ATF. The guy at NAPA is a tool and has no clue. SImilarly the transfercase takes the same GEAR OIL. The only ATF in an FJ60 is in the power steering.

That is what I thought as I used the 80w gear oil before... And no guys, I had him look and my rig so hopefully he new it was and 84 cruiser not the new FJCruiser.....Jeeeeze... It's funny some guy at the store heard us talking about using auto transmission fluid in the tranny and he came up and questioned the napa employee...the employee said with a straight face no doubt about it the auto tranny fluid was the way to go in a 1984 FJ60 tranny.

It is the way to go if you want to do an experiment on how long your transmission will last with ATF in it. Make you wonder who has followed his advise lately.

I know it's strange, but I know that some Ford sticks take ATF as opposed to gear oil. I realize of course that in our beloved 60's gear oil is the oil way t o go!

later AL cased manuals typically use ATF instead of 90 wt. Can be pretty confusing if you do not know what you are talking about..

As said, you want 90 wt..

Go back in there and bitch slap that guy! ATF in a manual transmission...

When he said "FJ series", you might have guessed what he meant.

Some newer rigs do run ATF an lightweight motor oil in the manuals and T/Cs. Lighter oil means less parasitic drag. Better fuel economy. By a very very small amount. But when a manufacturer is trying to meet the federally mandated fleet economy standards, every bit helps.

Your tranny/Tcase was not designed for these light oils. Us 90 weight, 80w90 weight, 85w140 or any other multi-weight that you like. But you have to run gear lube, not ATF or motor oil.

If someone said that to me I would think he is talking about an auto trans.

I reckon the thinnish atf fluid would really play havoc with the synchros:D
Changing gears would be like hanging onto a jack hammer;)

My '84 Mazda 626 spec'd gear oil for warmer climates and ATF for colder climates. I was getting a bit of syncro grind going into 2nd gear so I drained the 90wt and filled it with ATF. It totally fixed the syncro grind.
