I have an Fj62 with a v8 engine conversion, the auto trans is slipping in reverse grear.

1) do I rebuild the tranny
2) replace with another used tranny
3) replace with an H55?

actually I want to keep the automatic and would like to spend the least amount of money. any ideas?

Hey Pismo,
I went to school at Cal Poly SLO a few years back. Let me know if you off roading up there any time soon. I need a good excuse to go back up.

H55 will be big bucks, and a ton of work.
IMO, if you wanna stick with an auto, your best bet is to replace your tranny with another used one.
Is that the A440 behind the V8? How does that work for you if so?

x2 on the used trans, just saw one on e-bay with transfer case for $350. Thats where i got mine. Then you will have an extra one to rebuild for use at a later date. I am ordering a kit for my a440f in a week - i already have the trans manual on disk.

If you're going to rebuild the A440 it's a good idea to get the TC rebuilt as well.

Make sure your kick down cable is in adjustment, it can cause it to have a sluggish shift going into third as well as screwing with reverse.

Thank you for the good ideas....

The tranny is a 700R4

I have local transmission shop says that to rebuild would cost $2800 incl r&r

maybe it would better to drop it out and put in a good used tranny for $350 + r&r

what should be a nomal r&r fee?
