My auto tranny stopped shifting into overdrive. Just wondering if anyone else with a 62 has had this problem. It shifts fine in the other gears, but in the past when having to sit in traffic it has made some really clunky shifts.
The tranny is original, and has never had a problem since it was off the dealer lot. My rig has 178,000 miles on it.

In January I am planning on changing out the ATF. Drop the pan on the tranny and clean the filter. filling with synthetic ATF, and see if this cures it.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Auto Tranny?

Hey There,
If your going to go to the trouble of dropping the pan, replacing or cleaning the sreen and changing fluids. It would be an opportune time to install a new kick-down cable. It's a little more work, but it will probalby help or fix your shifting problems. Based on excperience it made a world of difference for my A440F.
Also buy the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for the transmission it's around $20.00 and worth every penny. Good luck to you.

I hope flucxhing and cleaning does it or you. In my case, this didn`t work. I needed a new torque converter and clutches. Make sure you torque every tranny bolt you touch. You could snap some off or worse get some warping. Been there, done that!

Be a good time to add a tranny cooler also. Temps kill and the stock in radiator cooler is typically not enough.

Suggest a passive flush on the system when changing fluids by using the tranny pump flush out the old fluid.

Rodney, the tranny expert, on the 3FE list suggested a crazy way to fix a stuck valve. IIRC you go about 60+MPH and slam the tranny into Park for a couple seconds and then back to drive. I do not know anyone that actually has the balls to do this, but if you valve body is sticking it might help. I would check the 3FE archives for exact procedure.

Also lube up the kick down cable.

Yeah i dont know if i have the balls for that either. would like to hear of someone who has tried that.

Thanks for all your tips.
looking forward to seeing if I can cure this tranny.

Here I am! I've done Rodney's "party trick" on two different 62s and it wasn't the cure to the problem I was experiencing. It does make you sweat a little the first time you jam the shifter into P while doing 55+ but after that first rush, it becomes a no-sweat deal and is quite fun to do with unsuspecting passengers, especially if it's their truck!! The purpose of the action is to clear something in the transmission, but I don't remember exactly what at the moment. I think Rodney has explained it to the 3FE list so check the archives there using birfield.com 's search engine - much better than the Yahoo search.
On the torque converter lock-up question, my '88 A440F never locked up until I replaced the stock valve body with Rodney's Extreme valve body. He correctly diagnosed the problem to be that after I described the situation to him. I would do the passive flush, clean the filter screen and replace the ATF with good synthetic and keep my fingers crossed that a stuck spring or ball bearing loosens up allowing the lock up function to work once again. Good luck.

I sure wouldn't have thought to do it without input from someone I trusted. Rodney from OZ is the most knowledgeable and experienced Cruiser auto tranny tech/engineer I've talked and dealt with yet. Rodney had me try this free fix before spending money on his valve body. He had to be asked at least three times if he was putting me on, but assured me that any automatic can handle this sort if treatment. All execpt for Bentleys for some unknown reason so don't go trying the party trick on any of your friend's Bentleys.
