Hi — My wife and I bought a 2000 Land Cruiser a month ago. It must be the "base" model, as it has no auto-dimming mirror—and, apparently, no wiring for one. We'd like to install one but don't know how to proceed.

I called DarCars' Toyota service dept. and learned that their charge for the part alone was $820+.

Has anyone found a relatively inexpensive way around this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Yep, put a bunch of gear and crap in the back and the glare is gone!
Or use the flipy thing on the mirror.

Those are my budget solutions, otherwise maybe junkyard or e-bay.

Gabe,

First off, welcome to the MUD!

You'll find tons of good info here on your '00 LC. As to the mirror, according to Slee's web site (warning, if you haven't been there yet, hide the CC before visiting...), the auto dimming mirror started with the '01 model - Slee Off-Road 100 Series Newbie Guide. As to the wiring, not sure if there's more to it than just providing a 12V source and ground or not. How willing/able to work on your rig are you? You could also check CL/the classified section here/local boneyards to see if anyone is parting out an '01+ rig, though they're kind of rare to find being parted.

If you're looking to have someone do it for you, and the $1K bill to avoid flipping the lever scares you, you might want to find a local shop (what general area are you in?) that could install an aftermarket one.

Either that, or visit the 5% window tint thread and make it a non-issue!

I have a 2000 and it has the auto-dimming mirror, I wish it didn't.

I know what you mean. I have one on my '00 Avalon. The only time it works right is when I back out of my garage early in the AM. :meh: You'll have to send a note to Cristo to update his model year FAQ. Maybe you could swap Gabe?
