Auto cad, drawing with measurements, and detailed pics of mounting bumper

M going to build my own bumper but can't have my dd spend weeks without a front bumper so I'm looking for detailed demons ions and mounting points for aftermarket bumpers. In a perfect world, an auto cad file with complete parts measurements would be the best to just opt and cut out and weld everything before taking off stock bumper. Next would be computer or hand drawings of all components with measurements so I could make it before stock bumper disassembly. Finally. Detailed pics of installing a bumper with a general idea of how to mount and amount of steel required.

IMO, lighter is better. All you need is enough steel to protect the front end, hold a winch and improve your approach angle. Unless you plan to use your truck for a battering ram, I see no need to install a 200 lb bumper.

If you plan to install a winch, I'd design around a new crossmember that will support the winch and then have the outer bumper skin mount to that. So you'll only need beefed up support on the winch mount, and can use a lighter gauge steel for the outer shell.

I don't think I'm infringing on any patents, but here is a good example of a replacement crossmember that holds the winch:

Why don't you just email the manufacturer of those bumpers and ask them for their CAD drawings and see what their response is? I'm sure they'll quickly email you their drawings so you can build your own.

I can't imagine anyone having said drawings unless they are a manufacturer/fabricator. The MANY hours it takes to peform all the measurements, convert said measurement into CAD drawings, send the drawings out to a plasma/laser cutter, mount pieces to make sure they fit correctly, make modifications to original drawings to come to a final design then give it away...REALLY?

Sorry for getting on a soap box but I consider many of those making parts for the FJC friends and its a bit insulting to ask them to give away their hard work, what you are asking for is the "hard" part of fabricating a part, the "easy" part is getting the pieces cut and welding it together.

My best suggestion to you would be to check your local club and/or "auto recycling yard" to find a take off that you can use to mock up your own, on your own time without having to have your DD without a front bumper during that process.

You should email tech@arbusa. They are very helpful and I am sure they would not mind sending you the files. You should ask for the assembly drawings as well, and the CNC laser files. That will make the process much easier.

When you get those, can you hose them or post links to them as well. It would really help a lot of people.

If you are really interested, I've got some folks that owe me a favor and will be in Davis, CA this week for some testing. Not sure if you are currently in CA or BC, but there is potential they could laser scan the front end for you. All you'd get is the output file and would need to source your own software to analyze and generate a 3d model from.

Honestly, for all the hassel you'd have to go through its a heck of a lot easier pulling off the bumper and getting out the old tape measure and sketching the important dimensions on paper and toss your bumper back on while you work out the design.

I guess some of the FJ Cruiser people aren't as open about fabricating as the FJ 40 folks.

First, everyone needs to relax. Did I say for someone to steal a professionally built bumper's dimensions? I took the chance that a private person may have planned out a bumper that they designed and might want to share that information. Please don't start waving the high and mighty flag that I am taking the food out of a companies mouth by taking their design. I have the ability to build my own bumper but need to save some time on the designing process so I don't have to drive around without bumper for a few weeks.

I also asked for a rough estimate on material quantity to again, save me a few trips and excess money when buying the material needed. I provided links for a rough idea of what I am planning and asked that if someone did something similar, maybe they could post how much material they used.

I did not ask for a specific premanufacturd bumper's deminsions and I did not say, "please measure all the pieces from a bumper you bought so I can copy it". I asked if someone has made a bumper, through superior computer skills and would like to share that information, that they post up.

As to the offer to go to Davis, thank you for the consideration. I live about four and a half hours from Davis, and it isn't in my schedule to drive up there.

So, there are "people" in the 40 section that have this? Can you please post a link to that info, it would help with my 45 build.

This I could help with, well, the pics but can't give you any idea on the amount of steel necessary for the bumper your building in your mind.

Fact of the matter is that you asked for something in "a perfect world" that only a manufacturer or professional fabricator would have invested the time to acquire. I would find it extremely rare to find an individual who would resort to drawing with detailed enough dimensions that one could design/build a bumper off of. At least, the "garage" fabricators I know.

Again, your best resource will be finding a take off from someone. Second, as FJNewb offered up is to take the time to take your's off, take your measurements then put it back on during fabrication time. One could easily take the front bumper off, take the necessary dimensions/pictures and put it back on before lunch.

"People" are just as friendly here as there and all in between. Good luck again...
