We went out to the dunes the other day. I was very pleased to get up the middle of the dunes, I didn't think the 3B could do that, it's not massively steep just soft and very long. I had to go down to 7PSI to get up there, at 12psi I was actually running out of power in 2nd low!

Despite repeated dune attempts and a hot day my coolant temp never got above 82c (179.6F). Very happy with that!

By chance I saw 4WD Systems have all the front Aussie Lokkas on special. Landcruiser Lokkas are $308 delivered so I bought one. Great price and an Aussie product too.

have u noticed any change in fuel consumption with the new fan clutch?

I filled mine with 35-40ml 10000cst silicone oil and lowered the temperature setting from the two screws inside the clutch, following a thread on mud. now dash temp is ok, lots more roaring but fuel consumption increased by 10%, i.e. from 8.3/100km to 9.5/100km.

Do you have high flow thermostat?

It's hard to say if it has dropped my fuel economy, my 2 fills since I fitted it have had offroading but I do suspect it has had a negative effect. If it's drastically negative I'll move to electric fans. I've looked and I can't find a set of fans from something that are a nice fit. I'd like 2 fans for redundancy but the vehicles with similar sized radiators tend to have one or be small hatch backs (which implies insufficient flow). If I do follow that path I'll likely go for aftermarket fans with a custom shroud.

The thermostat is a genuine Toyota item.

If anyone is interested, I called Soltogios (largest truck wreckers in the state) asking the price for a non turbo 14B engine. He said they didn't have one but if they did it would be around $3500!

Watch out for your fingers and toes dealing with Soltoggios. They have some cool stuff in there but...

The diesels are not great in sand dunes, but they use barely any fuel plodding around on flat sand. My 1HZ would use about 5-6 litres an hour in low gear following small coastal dunes.

Did you find the water pump you need?

nice one on the locker mate, I just installed exactly one of these about a month ago. have not been off road yet but let me know if you have any install issues in it as I just did this job, my issue with the install was taking the hubs apart and needing to replace all the seals etc when putting it back together, just more work and extra cost, and then noticing a seized piston on the front caliper so those needed a rebuild and it all got out of hand from there because I have now spent 2k on the brake system altogether to get it working but good luck with the install!

Are there any wreckers that aren't a bit dodgy? haha At $3500 for a 25 year old small truck engine that's not even turbo I don't think I will be dealing with them regardless!

Still haven't got a water pump yet.

I completely disassembled my Suzuki free wheeling hubs once (they're exactly the same as Toyota Aisin with a different spline cut in the dog gear) and boy did I have a whale of a time getting the springs and circlips back into place! I think I may have a sticking piston in one of my calipers, I'm looking towards fitting HZJ75 calipers at a later date anyway.

I'd ummed and arred about getting an autolocker for a long time. I can't afford a selectable locker and I don't have a massive need for lockers but they're sure handy to have. I have an autolocker in the rear of my Suzuki LJ80 and it's totally transparent to drive. There's no banging or lurching like many people go on about, just a light clicking at carpark speed and the odd bang if you nail the throttle in a corner at very low speed. What really shat me was the extra drivetrain play and I think it contributed to my broken transfercases. I've decided to run with the shimmed LSD in the rear and an autolocker in the front. I'm worried the autolocker might cause understeer or digging in sand but if I don't like it I can always pull it out.

Anyway the locker turned up surprisingly quickly given where I live.

I've installed a Richmond Lockright, Spartan and Detroit (not in Landcruisers though) and this looks the nicest made, that said they're all quality items. There's quite comprehensive instructions that are model specific, only downside is it doesn't include a new cross shaft. It's the cheapest of the lot.

I'll be installing much later on. I still need to finish off and install my shimmed LSD, then I'll rebuild that 3rd member with the Lokka and put it in the front. I've ordered the bits to rebuild my gearbox and transfer case and that will come before this.

As my stereo says, it's my birthday today!

I've had the MadMan EMS2 gauge for a long time but only just installed it. This is a really nifty bit of kit that I'm very happy to have found. It can display Coolant/oil/gearbox temp, oil/boost pressure, EGT, volts, engine hours and it has programable alarms for all of those. It can also display coolant level in the engine, not just the overflow bottle like most things. I really wanted wanted something with alarms, you're not always looking at the gauges. I also didn't want to have gauges plastered everywhere so 1 gauge to do everything is a big winner.

It's also quite affordable. It was a bit under $300 with an extra 1m of wiring loom and a number of senders. Considering how much it does, thats an absolute bargain.

Here's their website.

Madman Developments - MadMan EMS2 Unit

As you might be able to see, my GF got me a VMS GPS for birthday, very pleased!

I decided to pull the dash to get the wires to fit as I wanted, I also refitted my stereo (I had a crappy eBay in it) and ran the antenna cord behind the speedo as well. I was very pleased to see the far right hand vent (which is closable) is able to be bolted in where the always open vents are. I'll be sourcing some of those.

I sorted my water pump. I ended up with a GMB W3068 which fits perfectly. It's cast iron and made in Japan. I had a heart raising moment after fitting it. I filled the cooling system, thought I had got the air out of it and drove to work (only a few KMs away). I was watching the gauge, it went from 41°c to 108 in just a few seconds and the stock gauge raised quickly also. I limped it to a house a few hundred metres away and topped it up. I guess there was large air bubble or something, I never a thought the temperature could go up that fast, easy to see how a blown hose could kill a motor before you even notice.

I had intended to fit this inside/outside temperature dash pod but the gauge is a better use of the space, I will probably mount the GPS to cover the other portion of the pod. This car originally had the inclinometer/altimeter which IMO is largely useless. My 4runner had similar and the alitimeter was quite accurate but the landcruiser one was much less sensitive. GPS makes all that obsolete anyway.

Also, I said I would update on my turbo debacle. A few pages back I picked up a T25 from a friend. I also bought a Mamba extended tip billet compressor wheel for it (standard size). I attempted to rebuild it which went fine until my GFs puppy pulled the turbine wheel off the table and bent some fins! I straighted them out but wasn't really keen on it. Whilst trying to fit that billet compressor wheel I broke the piston ring exhaust seal.

So after pricing some stuff up I hit up alibaba suppliers and bought a whole brand new CHRA for a measly $125 posted from powertecturbo! Not money well spent, as it would turn out.

This looked pretty good, it was very professionally packaged and for the most part actually had a nicer finish than the Garret. The turbine looked a bit worse (90 degree edges, rougher profile) than the Garret one but the compressor and core looked better.

But the core isn't correctly machined, the compressor housing touches compressor wheel. Also the turbine shaft doesn't appear to be incorrectly machined as the compressor wheel doesn't rotate quite concentric to the axis of rotation.

Also that Mamba billet compressor wheel? Well whilst it's a work of art, both beauty and engineering (smallest balance mark I've ever seen) it doesn't really fit. They left almost no clearance to the compressor housing and it touches with the slightest wiggle.

So I'd kinda cracked the s***s with spending money and time on this old tech turbo for no result and started looking for something else. The TD04-13T maps out well, good surge, plenty of reserve flow, can do ultra high pressure ratios (not that I'm aiming for that) and is 73% efficient at cruise.

I seriously considered second hand TD04HL-13Ts from volvos and TD04L-13Ts from WRXs on eBay but I saw Kinugawa had TD04L-13Ts on special for $616 delivered. After all my issues with second hand stuff I decided to go with that. I figured it would probably get me the most modern wheels too, the turbine is gen 3 as per dougals definitions.

Geniune MHI core, 6cm T25 flange exhaust housing, the fancy adjustable wastegate (I asked them to put in a 15psi spring and they did), all the lines/gaskets and a compressor housing that is easy to rotate. I'm very pleased.

I've got most of the bits to make my exhaust manifold (flange, elbows ect) just need some tees, exhuast/intake pipes and a downwards pointing oil filter housing. There's a very rusty BJ40 on a farm nearby I can hopefully get that from.

The BJ73 is loaded up and we are heading off to Esperance for 10 days. A few little things left to do on the car but we're leaving tomorrow. Hopefully all goes well, I'm looking forward to it! :bounce:

Still out east of Esperance at the moment, gotta be at work on Friday so we've got another few days out here.

For the BJ73 owners, you can cut one of these hoses to make both the bigger heater hoses. Even better the 25 is only $9.90 at supercheap. They are 6cyl VB Commodore.

Also Rosco nailed it, Wharton beach at Duke of New Orleans bay is the best beach I've ever seen.

Funnily enough I ended up getting a new radiator (HDJ79 copper/brass) from Repco. He said "we've got one in stock but it's listed at $990. Nah that's a rediculous price, I reckon we could do it for $550."

It's OEX brand. I haven't fitted it yet, I've done almost 500 kms with my radiator held in by coat hangers and tie wire haha. Will fit it tonight, hopefully it cools as well as the alloy one.

FWIW I also called NatRad and they said $420 for a plastic/alluminium or $750 for a copper/brass.

if you bring it up to australind i can get that re-welded for you easy... even if you want it as a spare, could probably add some meat to make it stronger.

Could they not do a BJ73 specific OEX one? or did you want the bigger HDJ one for more cooling

Sorry, I didn't ask about a BJ73 one. There's no chance they'd have one in stock anyway. I've already extended my radiator shroud and changed the piping to suit the hdj rad so I certainly wanted another one.

I might take you up on that, cheers mate. :)

FWIW it cooled really well and I think it's a decent unit but it needs the mounts gusseted. Probably the same issue with all sorts of eBay radiators.

About to rip into it, hopefully all goes well!

Well the radiator is in. I had a few issues getting it to fit and the quality isn't what you would expect for the money. I'll just say that I won't be buying an OEX radiator again.

Hopefully it cools well. We're going through the Stirling ranges today and aiming to be home tonight.

I'll be returning the OEX radiator, it doesn't cool particularly well. I think it would overheat on sand on a hot day. I think that's particularly poor given it's meant for a heavier vehicle with almost twice the power!

The OEX is also a pretty crappy fit, I had to file the strap on one side to stop it rubbing on the panel. The mounting bracket on the passengers side is welded on a few mms to far back. The top tank rubs on the panel.

There was quite a bit of corrosion already inside the radiator. I was pretty pissed to see the corrosion on the surfaces the cap seals on.

It had badly painted over rust on the mounts.

Overall, I'm not happy. I know it's one fan blade down but the old radiator was still cooling perfectly and has never gotten above 82 degrees.

Looks like the eBay one had been leaking, explains my very small but very persistent water loss.

I've seen prices just under $1000 for the Terrain Tamer and PWR alloy ones but I really can't afford that. I might buy another eBay one and get the brackets braced. I could go plastic alloy but I don't think that's really for me. I'm certainly sold on alloy radiators.

Just when I thought I had beaten my cooling system!

So, Esperance.

We left late on Tuesday and camped out east of Denmark where the Hay River meets Wilson inlet.

I love this campsite, great spot and a nice old school camp. I've stayed here before.

We were woken around 4am by someone driving a tractor several hundred meters out into the inlet to get to their dingy, I guess there's a sand bar they follow!

The next day we went through Albany and onwards to Raventhorpe. You might have seen this engine on page 1? I ran a tape measure over it and it's roughly an 18" bore and 22" stroke. with 8 cylinders that's 44786.5 cubic inches or 734 litres!

Daw lookout east of Ravensthorpe. We camped near here.

The next day we hit Esperance before lunch. Nice beaches already!

We visited the museum and did other touristy stuff. I've always liked Austin 7s.

We stayed at Bushlands caravan park which is probably the nicest caravan park I've ever stayed at.

Some idiot  locked the keys in the landcruiser. I tried for ages to unlock it with a coathanger down the side of the window but I don't think it's possible. Once the place opened I called the RAC guy and despite him being very confident he'd have it open in minutes it took him quite some time to get in. It certainly gives me quite some confidence in the car, I'd just assumed that being an older vehicle it'd be quite easy to break into. I had a fairly late model Suzuki that locked its self (dud battery) and once you knew how to do it you could get into the car in under 30 seconds!

Anyways, we stopped in at the restoration club, a large scale men in sheds type deal. I'd highly recommend it if you're into mechanical stuff. That had all sorts of cool stuff. Something a bit different is this ambulance. It's owned by St Johns and is still fully licensed and (very occasionally) used as an ambulance!

Onwards to East to adventure!

We hit Cape Le Grand. Great scenery but it's you typical wayyyy over managed national park/tourist trap.

Hellfire bay.

A small hike to little Hellfire bay. Very nice place.

Islands.

We went out to Dunns Rock beach and camped in the dunes. I love a good sunrise.

The sand really is that white.

A quick morning swim and we were on our way.
