After selling both my 40's a few years ago I finally bought a decent 45 worthy of a restoration. This truck was imported from Australia and is super clean with low miles. I have wanted an RHD FJ45 for a while. Now I need to hunt down some original wheels and hubcaps. Project pics to come.....

Those are most likely the original wheels for that truck. At least they were for 1981-1983 FJ40s.

my bad....I was thinking US rigs.

No. Those are 15" American-issue rims. They were never sold in Australia. The 45/47 came with split rims, which are a terrible rim and should only be used in bush applications where a person needs to be able to change a tube when no-where near a repair shop.

It is for this reason that almost all rigs of that era (except for those used mostly in the aforementioned rural areas) tend to have after-market white spokes installed.

While splitties are strong and nearly indestructible, they require tubes and are prone to blow-outs. They are also severly speed-limited due to the heat which tube-on-tire can cause.

I have only ever had two blow outs in my life and both were with split rims.

Beautiful truck!! You rarely see the factory bed here any more. I can't wait to see what you will do with it.

Cheers,

Josh

I hope it isn't this one. Read his other posts and he gave the original split rims away.

Wheels are different so I guess it isn't the same one. But splits would have been stock on a Australian truck.

Man, you are a sharpshooter! Not mine, but couldn't even give the split rims away. Anyway, once I got them off the truck, I tried to take them apart to see if they were even worth keeping around in storage. They were really badly corroded to the point that you couldn't even get them apart.

Thanks for the info on wheels. It sounds like split wheels are a really bad idea for my application. I will have to re-think my choice in wheels. The white steel wheels just feel cheap.....like the truck deserves better.

Go with the split rims. There are lots of people running them with no problems whatsoever; myself included. Besides, they just look cool.

Marv has a number of the factory 16" non-split rims which came on the 40/42 and 60 series in Australia. That would look very good on that rig.

Splits are fine. I've changed many split rim tubes and it is pretty easy - just have to be careful when first filling them with air. If you are keen to change tubes in your spare time and don't care about getting a perfectly balanced tyre, then I'd say go with splits to keep it original.

Personally, I've always loved the look of the factory hubcaps on the pickups. Of course, I also think yours look great with the US rims on it now.
