Location
Tega Cay, SC
Who: ONSC members looking to get out of the heat in the Piedmont
What: Camping Trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway
When: Friday, August 2nd - Sunday August 4th
Where: Julian Price Campground located off the Blue Ridge Parkway just south of Blowing Rock, NC
Why: Let's face it, it can get awfully hot in Piedmont in the Summertime and escaping to the mountains promises cooler temps and some time outdoors.

We've reserved several campsites at Julian Price Campground that are right on Price Lake, where non-motorized boats and fishing are permitted. Don't have a boat? The campground has canoe rentals.

We won't have any organized group activities except for a potluck on that Saturday night. Not familiar with the area and exploring the campground not your thing? There is a lot to see and do near by. My suggestions include:
  • Find some forestry roads and see where they take you :steer:
  • Tour Appalachian Mountain Brewery in Boone
  • Linville Caverns (a great way to escape the heat)
  • Shopping and/or going out for ice cream in Blowing Rock
  • Visit Moses Cone Memorial Park and hike around Bass Lake
  • Take the kids to Tweetsie Railroad
  • Go to Grandfather Mountain and cross the mile high swinging bridge
  • Visit The Orchard at Altapass for some Mountain Music :grinpimp:
  • Mine for gemstones in Spruce Pine
  • Play in the creek at Julian Price Park
  • Shop at the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis

Your favorite things to do and see aren't listed above? Feel free to post up your suggestions.

I hope you'll make plans to join us.

We may be making a family beach trip that weekend but will check the calendar. I like the way you think. Thanks.

Lots to do in that area, hopefully I will be able to make back there:

Best fly fishing in the state in the surrounding areas (I used to be a guide when I went to ASU)
Tubing the new river with a cooler of beer floating next to you.
For you adrenalin junkies, jumping off the 20-40ft cliffs at compression falls (highly recommended)
Lots of other activities off of the blue ridge parkway

I won't be able to make it. I'll be in hardcore study mode at that time.

Make sure to take tons of pictures :D

We will definitely look into it, but may not make it. We return from a long trip to NE Utah on the 29th.

Looks like might have a cruiser by this trip . Since 45 is down , didn't think it was in the cards.Checking out 80 tomorrow , if I get it I'm in Eric

Sounds like a good time. I'd like for us to make it, but we'll be coming back from Colorado the week before, and doubt I could make it happen.

Sorry just found out I will be in Denver that week so I'm out .

I don't see it happening for me this time :frown: Just too close to my already scheduled trip.

It was hard coming back home from the mountain climate yesterday after the weather we had on the Hurricane Creek trip this past weekend. I'm hopeful we'll have similarly good weather for this trip.

Please let me know if you have any questions. It is about time for those going to start firming up our plans/meals for the weekend.

We'll have a cut off date on this trip, to release any campsite we don't need. I haven't checked in a while, but I beleive we only have 5 campsites booked, and I'm sure the rest are unavailable.

Cut off on this trip will be the 24th. We have 4 campsites reserved, and for the weekend (F-S nights) it will be $38. There are only 2 spots left reserved, and 4 total in the entire campsite. So, if you're thinking of going, speak up now! On the 24th, I will release the campsites so we don't get charged the full amount.

We'll do a similar meal plan as we did in Hurricane Creek and I'll start that this weekend...

We had a great time this weekend and managed to pack a lot into just a few short days. The weather was great overall. Here are some photos of the waterfront campsite, a view from Grandfather Mountain, close-up of Linville Falls and a dam the girls and I rebuilt in one of the streams at Julian Price Park.

How do you get to the bottom of Linville Falls?? Is it a marked trail?

I've only been there once and we hiked up to the overlooks. I saw people down at the bottom, but don't remember seeing any other trails.

Yeah it's a marked trail.

It was on one that I picked up from the ranger station last time I was up there.

Yes, there is a marked trail and I think it is called the gorge trail. As you face the visitor center from the parking lot, the trail starts to the left. I recall there is a map on the side of the visitors center that shows all the options. It's obviously very steep in sections. Nowhere near as easy a trail as the one most everyone takes. It was our first time ever taking it and it was well worth it.
