From this t4r.org thread 3rd Gen Scangauge II Owners! - Toyota - 4Runner . org Forum
and previously from fjcruiserforums......

If you have a SGII with the Xgauge feature, here is a code that people are successfully reading auto trans temps......here is the quote:

FYI, I've had a ScanGauge II for a few months and recently puzzled out the XGauge codes for measuring automatic transmission fluid temperature. Here's the scoop:

TXD: 686AF101B4
RXF: 044105B40000
RXD: 2808
MTH: 00090005FFD8

I've verified that this works with my '02 4Runner and suspect that the codes would work with an FJCruiser as well (even though the FJ is a *much* less capable off-road vehicle....). Please let folks know if you try it and it works for you. I'm not a regular reader of this forum, but wanted to pass the info along as it seems to be of general interest.

I've read about two 02' runners and a 99' runner getting it to work. Anyone with a Taco or 4Runner that has the SGII w/xgauge ready to enter this code?

I've only heard about it working on Runners so far, would be nice to find out what all it works for........A couple people tried on their 05+ tacos and it did not work, someone said the OBDII protocols changed in the 04'/05' revamp.

Makes me want to buy a SGII :)

From here: ScanGaugeII - Upgrade

Here is info about upgrading an older SGII with the Xgauge add on.....

The XGauge Feature will only work on ScanGaugeII, not the original ScanGauge

Free Upgrade if your ScanGauge was purchased on or after July 20th, 2007

The cost to upgrade if yours was purchased before July 20th is $25 (USD) per ScanGauge

There will be a new manual included with every upgrade

Cool, I'll try and see what I get. Is there a specific "NAM" you have to give it, or will any work? Usually this is listed for other codes i.e.

I just applied this X-code to my SGII for my 2001 Tacoma 3RZ and it worked! Thanks!

worked on my 04 Taco
Correction, the A/F one didnt work only the ATF so far but I still wanna try more.

Nice :)

I had heard that Toyota changed it's OBDII protocol in 05' so I don't think it will work for 05' and newer....

I've been thinking about purchasing one for a while now, ATF temp. seals the deal for me.

Yeah, I've been wanting trans temp for awhile now to see how I was doing crawling in 4lo and commute traffic, not that it was really necessary -- just curious, and was close to gathering all the stuff to hard mount a sensor in the line and figure out where to place a gauge. Problem finally resolved!

An SCII is gonna be my next addition to my '02 4runner. I'll pick one up for the '99 as well. I'll report back in a couple weeks even though its sounding like we'll already know what works on those years.

I think mine is reading a little hot. I parked my truck outside at work today, for about 8 hours. The outside temp was 24°F. The ScanGauge said the ATF was 45°F right after I started the truck. It warmed up to about 100°F and stabilized there on the way home, a little less than 4 miles.

I tried it on my 97 4runner and it did not work. I ended up sending the guage back as it was not worth the money.

Awesome.......looks like 99-02's are working. 96-98.... not so much.

I use the SGII on my '99 4Runner. It also works, with the same XGauge codes, in my wifes '01 RAV4.

Here's the deal: It can read basically everything the OBDII system is outputting. Problem with the 96-98 4runners is that they don't have an actual transmission temperature sensor that talks to the vehicle. All they have is an "idiot" switch that flips the warning light on when the fluid hits like 300 degrees. Starting in 99, they got a real sensor.

Obviously OBDII wasn't standard until 1996, so no dice on anything that age or older. However, any vehicle that has an actual transmission temperature sensor will work with the SGII for trans temp. If it's not a Toyota, it'll probably be a different XGauge code though.

Newer Toyota's probably need a different XGauge code as well...but it should still work once you get the right code. I can't imagine Toyota getting rid of the sensor....

Did anyone ever try out any of these codes? Curious as to which ones work.
