Just bought an 89 FJ62 - has 180,000 miles on it, and 60,000 on the transmission. ATF Indicator Light keeps coming on by gear shift. No visible signs of a leak. Added a quart of ATF and light didn't come on for several days, now is back on intermittently. Is it safe to drive? Previous owner rarely drove it over the several years he owned it. Any suggestions or anyone with similar experience?

Thanks!

Since you have not owned it long, you may want to look up the Rodney Transmission flush and fill and see if that helps. You also may want to check and see if fluid from the transfer case is getting into the transmission. Is it visibly leaking fluid?

When does the light come on? Will be important to know how long you drive it before it comes on, average speeds, in town stop and go or freeway, climbing hills or flat, etc. The light means tranny is generating too much heat. It is not good for the tranny if you keep driving with the light on (assuming the indication is not false). If you are on the freeway, make sure you are in OD otherwise the TC will never lockup and this in itself will cause overheating. Take it out on the freeway and watch the tach and listen and try to determine if it's shifting into all 4 gears plus the lockup shift. You should easily feel 1-2 shift, 2-3 shift, and then 3-4 shift once you get to about 45+ to 50mph, after that the lockup shift will be harder to detect but you should notice about a 200 rpm drop around 55+ mph on the tach.

Flush, filter and fill is also a good idea like others have said.

There's been lots of discussion on this tranny. The 3fe board is a good place to ask questions or search archives.

The light comes on after only driving a few miles in town. Haven't had it at higher speed yet, but plan to test that tonight.

Last time the light came on it was having a hard time switching from 2 to 3. But only once. Now the light has gone off and hasn't come on again and I have been driving it as my primary vehicle this week.

I think it is just low on fluid, I plan to change this weekend. Any helpful hints?

Make sure the drain pan is big. The tranny holds a lot of fluid. You can't drain it all, that's just the nature of automatic transmissions. When you start to put in the new fluid, don't over fill it.

The tranny pan has a drain plug so draining the fluid is easy but I'd also recommend dropping the pan and having a look at what's in the bottom of it. Should not be any metal. As well, you can then remove and clean the filter. The filter is a screen mesh style that can be cleaned with solvent/carb cleaner, etc and then reused. No need to by a new one.

If you drop the pan, use a new gasket.

Don't overtighten the pan bolts.
