I love this forum and the info you can find. I have an overheating issue with my 1987 HJ75 Troop Carrier running a 2H with an aftermarket turbo and a H55 gearbox. i have searched this forum and found lots of great info that i have followed and tried but hasn't seemed to work.
Driving around surface streets the temp is perfect but after a mile on the freeway the temp will climb to the red then i have to pull off and turn on the heater to expel the hot air.
My Troopie has 219000 km's, ARB bullbar with winch, 2H with ARB turbo kit and 33" Goodyears. The work i have done to try and resolve this issue is as follows:

RE-CORED/ REBUILT THE RADIATOR (proff. rebuilt)
REBUILT TURBO
NEW HOSES
NEW BELTS
NEW OEM RADIATOR CAP
REPLACED THE FAN CLUTCH SILICON OIL ( THANKS BENO)
FLUSHED THE ENGINE TWICE (seems fine)
50/50 COOLANT WATER COMBO
NEW OIL AND FILTER

Im not running a thermostat at the moment yet Beno has send me a new OEM to install.
I am yet to replace the fuel filter or clean the sedementer.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Im going to put in another water temp gauge instead of relying on a 26 year old one and see if it is different. There are smart people on this forum i know someone has had the same problem. Cheers

Is this a new problem, or has it always been this way? Does it have a Pyrometer or Boost gauge? If not, I'd install those pronto, and report back on your EGT's and boost level while highway cruising. It's possible your engine is running too much fuel and not enough air. Turn up the boost and turn down the fuel?

Thanks for the advice. I have a pyro on order and it has a boost gauge. Im only running 5psi boost. I've only had the truck 3 months and the original radiator was shot when i got it and thats why i had it re-cored. This is when i discovered the overheating issue. ill up the boost slightly and check my air fuel; mixture.

If it has a manual boost controller, maybe try running 8-10psi? I'm not familiar with the world of after market turbo-ed 2H's, but 5psi seems really low. I bet increasing that will make a world of difference.

even the safari turbo kit came regulated to 8 PSI .. so go up on that boost .. then tell us what you got from your pyro gauge ( please install probe in exhaust manifold .. )

I'm with you mate I'm not a big fan of relying on tired old electric temp or oil pressure gauges I always use good quality mechanical gauges to monitor whats going on

A couple of questions to help with diagnoseing the problem:

1. are you just assuming the trucks overheating by the gauge going into the red have you checked under the hood to see if the engines actually as hot as the gauge is indicating ie: coolant boiling or pushing excess fluid into the overflow bottle and the radiator and hoses being physically hotter than normal operating temp

2. is the truck using coolant do you have to top it up between trips

3. have you checked to engine oil and coolant for any signs of a leaking head gasket

It sounds like you've covered most of the basic's pretty well but I think I'd be getting that thermostat in there pretty quick to see if you've got too much flow they put those things in there for a good reason

Normally when I hear about over-heating at higher speeds the first thing I look at is radiator shrouds and other air flow devices (undertrays etc), but it sounds like you're fairly on top of bulk air flow items.

What about the water pump? I've seen pumps corroded to the point that the impeller blades were almost completely non-existent and the engine was effectively functioning on thermo-cycle recirculation only. Might be worth checking.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Coolant is flowing into the over flow bottle. I have check both the oil for coolant and coolant for oil but nothing was found. It does have the shroud on the radiator but that was installed after the heating issue. I removed the lower shroud under the rad to help air flow. I was told by the PO that the water pump had been replaced and was new but new could have been years ago. I haven't had a chance to really enjoy the truck till I figure this out.

Hi all,

Long shot, but does the engine have a clutch type fan? These sometimes fail.

Good luck!

Alan

No bubbles when cold and it does have a fan clutch that I pulled apart, baked and drained all the old silicon oil and replaced with new oil care of Beno.

Ok so tracking says my EGT, NEW BOOST and NEW H2O TEMP GAUGES will be here on friday. After reading this forum i need advice on where to mount the pyro probe? Pre or post turbo in the manifold? Im opting for pre but suggestions are encouraged. Cheers

Very nice troopy you've got there! Is she LHD or RHD?

Mount the EGT/Pyro probe pre turbo with the tip in the centre of the exhaust stream. It might take a bit longer to do than post turbo but IMHO, a bit of extra time installing is a lot nicer than expensive engine repairs if you run her too rich. Probably a good idea to remove the manifold to do this as well to avoid metal shavings going through the turbo.
Re acceptable EGT values, pre turbo, I wouldn't want to exceed 620 degrees Celsius in a 2H. I think that's about 1100 degrees Fahrenheit but don't quote me on that. Post turbo is difficult to say because temperature loss through the turbo is not easily measurable, hence putting the probe pre-turbo where it can show as close to the real temperature in the cylinders as possible.
Hope this helps.

Cheers AUSSIEHJCRUZA. Yeh pre turbo is what I was thinking as well. The pyro gaige run in C temp so 600 is what ill be watching for. indications are pointing to it runjjng to rich. Pyro and lead the fuel plus im going to mod the air intake a little and see my results. My Troopy is RHD. I imported it out of Sydney to Vegas. Thanks mate

Ive got a 1985 HJ75(no turbo) and had the exact same problem. I put on a separate temp gauge and it shows normal while the dash gauge red lines when I jump on the highway. All boiled down to a faulty gauge.

Cmoney that would be killer if that is my problem but at least I'm replacing old parts with new parts for the next owner. Temp, egt and boost go in this weekend fingers crossed. I must say a big thank you to everyone and their help and suggestions. That's what make L.C owners awesome.
