I have a 2002 LX with 60,000 miles on it. The warning light came on and the dealer told me that the O2 sensors need to be replaced. He quoted me $300 to change them, to which I asked if they are covered under warranty. He said that they were not.

Are they covered under the powertrain warranty (6 years/70,000 miles) or just under the basic warranty (4 years/50,000 miles)?

Any comments?

I don't think they are covered under the warranty for emissions equipment. I think they are covered only under the bumper to bumper period. Seems most crap out between 60-90k. Haven't heard of many getting replacement under warranty.

Check your warranty statement. The Federal Emissions Control warranty lasts up to 96 months or 80k miles for some parts. See if 02 sensor is listed.

If you live in California, you are also covered by California's Emission Control Warranty for some parts up to 7years or 70k miles.

If they are not covered by the warranty, hit up Dan at american toyota. He quoted me about 104 each. Thats just 208 and you can do it yourself. save a few bucks.

The O2 sensors are mfg by Denso (Toyota is a stock holder in Denso). You can order them online at this commercial site:

www.densoproducts.com

front - 234-4169 ($91.73)
rear - 234-4154 ($97.12)

When you throw a code, it is usually only one sensor. They are not replacing them ALL, just one of four.

The sensors cost less than $100 each. It took me 15 minutes to change mine out. They are easily accessed from under the vehicle. If you wanted to save some $$$ then this would be an easy way if you are mechanically inclined.

The problem is you don't know what the code was and so you don't know which sensor is bad...
