Hello i came across this 100 series modded by the arctic truck people in iceland; anybody know what mods where done to fit these tires on??

huge fender flares to start, those things are prob a good 4" plus wide. always think those trucks are cool and serve their purplose, but nothing else. COuldnt do much with them here in most of the US.
 
They have to cut a lot of metal sheet and put fender flares to fit the 38" to 45" balloons. Not much else involved. They often belong to rescue volunteers, who get the mods paid by government. They don't regear or mod the engine, so these trucks are usually clearly underpowered for anything else than snow plains. But they work perfectly there. as sweet as i think that looks, I can't even imagine what it ends up costing.... nevermind that i can't come up with a single US locale that it would be useful, except maybe on the beach or sand dunes ;P

on some of the them, the 80s IIRC, they end up having to move the axles a good bit to fit the tires. Big job I imagine.
 
i seen the discovery show with the 80 series but i'm sure they have to do some mods besides cutting just thought it was cool
 
Many in Iceland are taking their LCs (and other 4x4s) up on the snow fields/glaciers (not so wise IMO, being a climber myself) on trucks with HUGE tires and very low pressure. These trucks, even at their significant "heft" literally floats on top of white stuff - until they make a mistake and get stuck...

On of my Swedish friends live in Icelend and points to this site for some serious 4x4 travel on snow and ice: Fjallavinafélagið Kári

OK, so it's all in Icelandic, but if you click on a small link to the left you can get to some parts in English. There's a link to "pictures" and a bit down on that page you'll find a lot of 4x4 pictures in the white.

cool thanks for the info; i have given up on the new 200 series and will start mod my 06lx. for the stuff i do (mostly beach stuff some snow) i dont need extreme lift or tires. I have a kid so i need the running boards; i may switch them to slee's version. First thing i need is lights; not just to see where to go but to help clean up after surfing etc. I want soome on the roof any suggestions?
 
hey if you have time can you email the swedish guy and see where they get their body mods from; the flares are cool maybe later on but i need a bumper which i can add a winch onto. (do not want an arb; waiting for slee's but not sure how long) thanks

Sad to say it, but the red LC 60 reminds me too much of a Nissan Patrol, early 80ies model)....;)

That one is actually from Norway, from Arctic Trucks (AT) Norwegian branch, not far from my place. (I recognize the building)
This looks like 35", and afaik they move the rear axle on 37" and up. They mainly lift the body, not so much the suspension.
For serious glacier crossing they mount a ladder-like structure in the front, which juts out forward to prevent them from beeing "swallowed" by a (snowfilled) crack. This structure is hinged, and can be raised to a vertical position for on-road driving.

Mainly 90's, 120's & HiLux, + some older models, but you see how it works.

I couldn't find another of their promo vids from crossing Greenland.
And you know they took two 80's to the south pole some years ago.
 
hey uhu thanks a bunch any info on the 100 mods they did would be great ; i dont need radical lift actually having trouble with my ahc so once it goes out of warranty I'm gonna do what slee did to his old 99 lx (criimp the lines and just switch to old man emu or something). Mostly looking for the bumper with winch and ideas for roof lights. I go to nyc often and have a limit to 85 inch (216 centimeters) so I have some room to play with. I have heard you can get lots of glare from lights mounted on safari racks??? any comfirmation on this? Is it b/c the lights are to far back on the roof?? If this is the case I may just go with upfront lights thanks all everybody help:cheers:
 
If you have good pencil beams, the glare from lights mounted on the roof are not that bad. On the other hand, you are not likely looking for pencil beams while using roof mounted lights (at least not in the U.S.) since they are not muchg good in slow speed trail driving.

I am a FIRM beliver in lights mounted on the front and using those also for highbeam out on the highway (legal at least in some states).

And, working on getting some info from Iceland in regards to their fender flares. Stay tune, might take some time.
 
Watch the Top Gear Polar Special, where Clarkson and May drove to the North Pole in a Diesel Hilux, modified in Iceland. While Hammond raced them on a dog sled. It really is a SIQQQQQQ episode. They were the first people ever to drive to the North Pole.
 
Biggest problem with driving lights on the roof is that you are lighting up the air you look through more than with frontal lamps. That means that if the air is not clear you will be dazled by glare, from rain, snow, fog or dust.
But except from that it's great. Gives a good angle that lights up the road well.
