Do you know of anyone who's doing this--making what are essentially beefed-up ARBs for 80s?

Crash Thread with Photos

I don't know if anything is being built that is a duplicate in every way but the catchers mask look has and can be done. We've built a bumper for the 60 since 1990 that looked like an ARB. Before I knew what ARB was or had ever seen one. I even built a one off variation for a early 70's GMC Jimmy and a mid 80's Nissan pickup. We built six for the movie "Kingdom" . The difference was the uprights were tube rather than plate.
In 1990 when I did the first I didn't have a cnc table to cut the plate and they weren't as common as they are now. The shell on the first was 1/4". Later the shell was 3/16. I've never used 10gauge on a shell or wing. Most of us won't be in a crash where we can debate did my bumper hurt my truck or didn't it but quite a few of us will drag a corner on a tree or rock...I hate when they bend

@jaymar
We were going somewhere in between with this. It's a first run prototype...yes the wings have been lifted. Side plates that capture the d-rings are 1/2" plate. Center is 1/4" and the wings 3/16"......It sags the j spring about 1/2"
We have 3 different looks based on relatively the same channel...including a facemask

In fact, you know what I've always wanted to do? Start a crash-photo thread to see how Cruisers fare--stock, ARBed, whatever. Think I'll try that now, here:

I hope to be only a vicarious observer and not a participant in that thread. It will be useful.

Just giving you a hard time. The next time the story was told in the Internet it was gonna be 100mph. That's all ;)

And I think there is already a crash photos thread floating around. Or 2 now

For my input I bend arbs like a fat kids eat ice cream (no offense to fat kids I think im amongst ya now) but after 3 I was done. But good point of view questioning how bad 1/4" bumper will grandmaster that energy to the frame and occupants. But honestly in a sh*tty situation all that really matter is me and occupants.

Like someone mentioned above. Each accident is different and so manny variables at play. My truck cut off approaching a stop light and I learned my vacuum booster check valve had gone bad when exploded the vehicle in front of me at about 40 mph

Lady could not make up here mind on yellow light and braked the gassed then braked again. Needless to say I made the decision for her and she clearly made it all the way through the intersection. Probably before it turned red :mad:

Anybody seen fiberglass explode into a cloud of dust like carbon fiber?
Yeah I didn't know ford explore sport cross beds were plastic either.

Arb was bent pretty good but protected vitals. But then again it was vs a plastic structure basically vs other old iron or amor. But perfect half offset hit that shoulda done more damage. More variables at play I'm sure but bottom line it saved my truck. I was fine too. Hooked winch/snatch to a concrete bollard and pulled it off the tire and drive home. Pissed.

I was amazed of the metal's resiliency. The upper hoop smacked the hood and came back halfway or more into position on its own.

"Facemask" being a double-decker all the way across? One of the things I like about the ARB is that it's side-to-side, double-decker, and sticks out a bit--which provides a handy stop / tool shelf as well as keeping things out of the grille. Would love to see the same thing in higher-grade steel, possibly thicker as well, just for overkill. Wings seem tricky; brace against the frame and you have a much more critical weakness. (Thought I've been told there are other ways to beef the wings--box (enclose) them, maybe? Looks like you're doing that?
