I am looking at getting a Marlin Toy Box to use in my FJ40 buggy. I have planned on using a toyota 4 speed gearbox and transfercase so I can use a PTO winch. This setup will be mated to a Lexus V8 using a CRS bellhousing kit. Being in New Zealand I havent met anyone running the Marlin Box in cruisers but have heard good things about the hilux version.

Has anyone used the Marlin Toy Box? or does anyone have a different option that works well? I had planned on getting the 4.7 low range option.

Any help with be really appreciated.

I have a SM420 toybox to oldskool 3sp case in my 60 truggy and LOVE it

I've got a toybox between an H42 and a split case in my fj55 and it is pretty sweet dood.

With that thing in a 40, you'll need a good rear drive shaft as the angle will be pretty steep with how short your wheelbase is.

Cheers for the replies guys !

I had thought about the driveshaft angle but ive stretched the wheelbase to 2700mm (106 in) so I should be right. I call it a 40 series buggy but there is a lot more new/custom bits than stock parts. I just like the 40 series look. Trying to use all toyota bits though.

With the V8, if you're going to be using the horsepower for mud bogs, sand dunes, etc., you might want a stronger t-case. Maybe a split-case if you want to stay Toyota, but the older LC t-cases were not designed for shock loads.

Sounds like a cool build. Where are the pics Noob? Welcome!

Ive been lurking on this site for years but post stuff all. Call it semi Noob.:flipoff2:

When you say the split case do you mean the t case from the 3 speed box?

As for the photos I havnt yet worked out how to post them up. Also it doesnt help that whenever I go down to the shop I leave my camera at home.

split case is the one that came just after the 4spd case in the US. not sure of the chronology down under...i'm sure somebody can spout it off.

there were two types, with 34 and 38mm idler shafts. the 34mm were earlier, the 38mm were later and stronger.

Are you sure the split case is stronger than the mini case?

I screwed that post up good.... :p

I meant to compare LC t-cases. A mini t-case and a split case are probably comparable with the edge going to the mini t-case due to it's centered rear output.

I dont know much about the split case, but some of my cruiser friends seek out mini cases, so that is where my confusion was.

If they are going to a centered output as a result of bigger axles, a mini t-case gets them there.

I wanted a toybox but couldnt wait any longer(marlin had trouble getting some gear from japan, so i had to cancel my order) but i agree. the splitcase is recomeded because of its stoutness which is needed for the amount of torque created.

the 3 speed and 4 speed t-cases work but i think thats why marlin sells the t-case saver, so you dont make it a custom split case.
