it looks cool, the only time I could see useing this over a real fire would be when you are in the desert with absolutly no trees around. think how much firewood you could buy with 300$.

I'm tired of hauling/storing firewood...and trying to pump the smoke out of my lungs the next day: $ for $ out here propane beats wood hands down for cost per BTU output, storage, hauling, etc. And out here most summers and fall seasons like this year there are no campfires allowed due to fire reg's.

Carying fake logs into the wilderness for a fire seem a bit weird to me!

Out here in many places, due to the extreme fire danger, campfires are illegal most of the summer and until snow/rain starts late fall. So...it, for many, is either this or no fire at all. And you're right...when I lived in the mid west the whole no campfire thing was a foreign idea!

We have the same problem up here in Washington toward the end of summer --- fire restrictions. It really sucks sitting around camp in the dark.

I just bought one of these, but haven't used it yet.

It seems to be pretty well built and should work OK. I know the guys I run with will grumble, but at least they'll be grumbling around a legal fire (rather than sitting in the dark or risking a large fine).

We'll continue to have regular campfires when we can, but I'll carry this thing when fires are prohibited.

Thats ok, in a few years all we will be able to do is bring the HDTV out and pop in the Campfire DVD.

Don't laugh: With the proposed closure of thousands of miles of trail/off-roads out here this might be a reality sooner than you think :frown:.

Isn't an open fire of any kind prohibited during fire danger season?

I believe electric/propane type stoves, which the Portafire qualifies as, are exempt unless specifically prohibited by the USFS.

Looks like something fom Las Vegas....

This thing would be good for Moab, or any national parks where "Wood-burning fires" are banned.
In Arches & Canyonlands Nat. Parks you can have a fire - just not a wood-burning fire.

...BUT - that thing still isn't worth $200 bucks!

Around here, fires are legal during fire restrictions if they don't throw sparks, don't create ash, and can be turned off with a knob. In other words, propane stoves and/or campfires are legal. Wood fires and charcoal fires are prohibited.

Nice alternative to having to haul your ashes out of the desert.
