I was looking a Brock's rig and really, really like the Trail Grapplers. They are very similar to the Toyo Open Country M/Ts but are nearly $40 cheaper per tire.

Problem is, Nitto only makes them in one 16" size, and that happens to be 285/70-16....which seems to be a bit of an anomaly as far as mainstream tire sizes go. I haven't found any other tires in this size. That makes me a little nervous since blowing one in BFE might be a headache...but a spare (or two) would ease my mind a bit.

Is there anyone on here that is running these tires on a stock 16" wheel? If so, how do you like them, and could you post some pics? I would be curious to see how they compare visually to a 285/75 tire since the aspect ratio is smaller.

I believe that they do make 285's but profile is 70?

Thats right. I wouldn't mind giving them a try but I'd be curious as to how they compare visually to a 285 size tire with a 75 aspect ratio.

I've heard of 275 70, but not 285 70, I could be wrong! I was looking for tires recently so the sizes are still fresh in my head lol

If you really like that size, maybe you should wait. On their site at bottom of chart says 285/75R16 E is coming in Dec.

Ha, thanks Skidoo! I was just on their website looking and didn't happen to catch that.

I'll be waiting for the 285/75s.

I'm curious as to their winter performance, because obviously you're going to need them to work in the snow on your days off.

there is a sponsor on the blue FJC forum...I usually go through him for everything and he might have a good idea as to actual release date.

I am going to mountains later in November and again around December so if there is snow I can give a full report.

See, this is the problem when you own a beefy 4WD SUV in my line of work...everyone knows about it.

"Chief, it's a blizzard out here, I'm stuck at home!"

"Bull****, put it in 4LO and get in here. Pick up so-and-so while you're at it. You've got 10 minutes."

:D

Thanks Brock. Any info you can get on price or the official release date would be great. The Terra Grapplers I was running on the Yuke tore through some pretty gnarly snowstorms last year, so I'd be interested to get some feedback on the Trail Grapplers. The Mud Grapplers look interesting too...

got response from guy at Discount Tires Direct I buy my tires through....

He said that most MT are not as good in snow as other terrain but a few are better than most. He rated the Trail Grappler as one that is BETTER THAN MOST in the snow.

He said an aggressive tire though only rated as AT is the Goodyear Duratrac and it is excellent in the snow.

So for MT he said the Trail Grappler is the one to get....and for a very aggressive AT the Goodyear Duractrac if snow is one of your primary concerns.

Other than that he stated the 285x75 would be late December or early January with pricing at same time. Those were his recommendations as someone that sells lots of tires.....

Great news, Brock! Thanks for the heads up. I wouldn't call snow a "primary" concern per se...but being in CO, it's definitely on the list for about 3-4 months out of the year. It's good to hear that the TrailG's are thought of so highly in that area.

Looks like I'll be waiting (impatiently) for a couple more months before re-skinning the hundy...but maybe I'll be able to bank some overtime and do the lift and/or an ARB combo bar at the same time.

hey Fuzz I've been following some of your same research, and think I'm going with the Trail Grapplers as well.. will also be holding out for the 285 75.. thinking I'll sell the 18" Tundra rims I've got now and go back to the 16's, which are better for wheeling anyways.

FWIW on my Toyotas I've run BFG's, TrxUs MT, Toyo MT, and Maxxis Bighorn MT.. and that's probably in order of preference. I'm looking forward to something different with the Nittos, it's sounding more and more like the right tire.

I've been very very pleased with the Terra Grapplers I have on my Yukon....had them for 18 months and they barely look worn, and they mobbed through some serious crap last winter. I even screwed up and put the yukon in a 3-4 foot snow drift (made by the plows) on Santa Fe just south of Highlands Ranch Parkway...went too fast trying to change lanes and kicked the rear out - put me off the road. The tires/truck never missed a beat...just threw it from AutoTrac into 4HI and crawled right out. Didn't have to use low range...but I did have to change my underwear when I got home.

Looking forward to a change of pace, and the Trail Grapplers look like a good step up.
