anyone replace ac rear evaporator? 2007 lx470

truck has a major ac leak. will hold a charge for roughly a week. took it to lexus, and they tracked the leak to rear ac evaporator. $1,000 job done by lexus.

mechanic buddy looked it up. 300 for rear AC evaporator and 5 hours labor at 100 an hour, so lexus quote isn't too crazy

I searched the forum and found nothing about rear ac evaporator failure. NOTHING. seems to be a rare issue. I wonder how many bananas it would be to DIY. anyone have a diagram showing the rear AC evaporator? I hear its located on driverside rear of truck. thoughts? Tired of having no AC!!!

My issue may have been different than yours, however: The Lexus shop said my AC system had a leak right at the rear evap core. Major pain in the ass to replace! they wanted about the same amount of $.

I tested the system myself and found the leak to be near the passenger side front wheel well. Bought a replacement section online (fortunately it was bolt on). Had the system recharged with R134a. Nice and cool now! One banana...Two, if I had the R134a to refill on my own, but I took it to a shop for the fill.

If you track the leak to a different part of the smaller aluminum a/c hose (an area that isn't bolt on/off), I've seen the ac repair kits work wonders:

They are available at NAPA and many other retailers.

Sadly, if it's the rear evap core that is truly leaking it's a more involved repair, and I can be of little assistance.

I've looked at mine, I mounted an amp right next to it. Doesn't seem to bad to me. I didn't put a wrench on it or anything but at least it's easy to get at.

I've looked at mine, I mounted an amp right next to it. Doesn't seem to bad to me. I didn't put a wrench on it or anything but at least it's easy to get at.

wonder if its the line thats leaking or the AUX evaporator...

a dye kit and black light will help you find the leak... or low pressure compressed air and helper with a keen ear. Obviously, make sure the system is empty first. Also, make sure you refill with R134A only, once you've fixed the leak.
