Iltis unstucker winch type system? I seen a video on u tube showing one in use on an Iltis?

Hi All:

That is what has been refered to as a "capstan winch," which were often seen on the old "Series" Land Rovers (pre-Defender.)

If i remember correctly, on the capstan winch one ties a heavy rope to an anchor point, then the opposite end of the rope is wrapped around the capstan which is attached to a rear axle hub. The rope is kept under tension, and the rotating if the axle hub reels-in the rope, pulling the vehicle forward. At least in theory. :D

So, where did you guys find that M151A2?

Regards,

Alan

tHIS IS A PIC i GRABBED OFF YAHOO OR SOMEWHERE? tHERE WAS A GUY SELLING THESE BRAND NEW IN THE BOX THAT WERE FOR THE CANADIAN VW ILTIS? $179, HE SAID HE HAS LIKE 100 OF THEM? THOUGHT IT WAS A CHEAP ALTERNATIVE TO A WINCH? AND IT OPERATES EXACTLY LIKE YOU DESCRIBED AS I SEEN ON U TUBE.

I think that would put mucho stress on a single hub point, bad. That is my opinion. You have a 40 right, that weighs a whole lot more than a small jeep.

In a stuck situation in which you were in need of winching, that would be a huge amount of stress focused on one hub point, also not centered to the vehicle.

All I see coming from that could be breakage. That is my opinion.

But, what do I know, I have zero experience with this type of unstucker.

If your not buried in the mud but it's just slick and you need some help with traction to get up a rise, it's fine. But not for heavy pulling, you may need a locker as well, the traction wheel will slip and if you put a load on this one the other will slip.

there was a guy that made those to fit most trucks including the 40 .it was called the mcain hub winch. the spools went on both rear axles and wound up 2 cables since lockers were not widely used back then . they didnt last to long i think they were in 74 or 5 off road magazines good luck
