J,

I have a pretty REDNECK version that I built years ago with a 2Ton chain fall (overkill--just what I had laying around)... Awesome for pulling motors, tubs and bodies.. I also use it for loading heavy objects and pallets into the back of pickups etc.... mine is 8' tall.

I have a Gantry crane, but not an import. It's rated for 5 tons (shaw box). I rarely use it these days as the fork lift is more flexible. In the shop I have a 10k two post lift, so the gantry has become some what of yard art. I entertain the thought of selling the gantry but the big ass barn owls that perch up there at night would be devastated. haha

That's exactly what I want one for, so good to know it can handle that. How difficult is it to raise and lower the pulley? if it was around a tub, where would you pull it from? I assume the hoist would be centered. Do you pull it from the side with a long chain?

J,

With a chain fall it is just a matter of pulling on the chain.. the gear reduction seems like 50:1 to me.. slow, but progressive and gets the job done.. faster you pull on the chain.. the faster the lift.

I wish I had taken pictures yesterday when I pulled my tub and sat it on stands.. weight to center varies pending the cruiser/object.. I was close to centered on the 40 tub. When you start lifting, you will know, and adjust your straps/cable /chain as needed..

Ah, thanks J, I wasn't aware that it was a gear reduction, so that makes it much easier.

J, are those legs attached to the floor? I'd be afraid of them spreading apart with a heavy load.

I always dreamed of having a gantry crane on rollers,, that rode on beams on the walls of the shop, that allowed me to slide it forward and back in the shop without taking up any floor space.

Those legs are 2" Sch 160 seamless tubing with 3 passes of 10018 low-hy rod on the I-Beam... I'm not scared at ALL... I actually tested it and picked up a full pallet of blast sand after I made it... It just laughed at me...

I run across little 2-5 ton overhead crane systems all the time if you are interested in one.

I have a HF engine hoist I'm pretty happy with. Only reservation I'd have with the gantry crane is the quality of the chain hoist.

Not mobile, but I tossed a 4x8" box tube over the ends of my lift - have a chainfall on it. It's already been christened with a LS3 dropped from it to the boat.

I am fortunate that the guy that built my shop years before I bought the place thought to put a 40' I beam across the shop about 3/4 the way in. Had one trolley when I bought the place, I added another when I found a pair of Yale 1 Ton chain hoists at a pawm shop. I use them for all sorts of things.

Using the combination of those, the lift and engine hoist makes moving most anything possible.

When I built my shed I installed this beam and trolley with the 1 ton block. The beam was rated at 4 ton and is 8 foot high.
