Any way to just take the speaker grilles off without removing the door panel?

Every stereo job I see shows people taking the whole door panel off. That's OK with me when it comes to the actual install, but I just want to remove a grille and confirm 100% what speakers will/won't will fit in those boxes.

Is this even possible? I didn't want to start yanking at something and break it if it's not removable, haha...

Thanks again in advance guys.

no way - held on by three or 4 phillips screws from the back

Thanks!

I continue to admire how well built these vehicles are.

Guess I'll have to take one off and see. As far as I know, the ML non-nav stereo has the 6.5"-ish speakers in the door on the 01 LX. I just wanted to know for sure. Didn't want to get stuck with something I couldn't install after the fact.

I have a ML w/ nav as an FYI but my front speakers technically used the 6" reform kit when I repaired mine, but the rear doors use a 4 or 5" speaker kit. (SimplySpeakers.com can tell you for certain.) I took all of mine off only to realize I wasted my time since I didn't buy the smaller speaker foams for the rears. The subwoofer is the same as front doors speakers also. In fact I think it's even easier to access than the doors. If you have any questions about door removal or wood console removal feel free to ask since I did them all recently. (Just noticed you're an '01 so different console and much less risky to remove yours.)

It is definitely possible, but I recommend pulling the whole door panel.

You could pull just the bottom of the door panel away from the door a bit and support it with something soft. get in there with a stubby screwdriver or skewdriver.

In my lifetime I've wasted untold hours and ruined more stuff trying to figure out an "easier" way to do something so I wouldn't have to take off so many parts. Take off the door panel.
