For now, it's not a traditional coil spring, it looks more like a piece of 1/8" flat stock wound into a spiral approx 1" in dia. There's a small ear on the inner and outer ends of the spiral.

And Schlage CS was helpful to the point that they could tell me they couldn't help me.

Thanks, guys. Inside the handle, the snap ring holds in the side control, which is on top of the spring. Anyone have anything like this spring??

Thanks, Jim must be your local buddy? We tried several different sets from our local stores, but they were all too long. The result would have been drilling another hole and finding something to plug the first hole or replacing the front door.

The beauty is that we don't need a keyed unit as ours has an electric combo lock on the deadbolt above. No more kids losing spare keys or the wife leaving them in the house.

What you have there is one of Schlage's early models of their "F" Series picture handle sets. I am surprised it has lasted you this long. There is nothing that is "off the shelf" that you could use to fix your problem that I am aware of. The whole series was designed to economical and not very repairable. So you can continue to try to fabricate a return spring or purchase a new lock. Worst case is that the new one might different size base trim so you might feel the need to repaint the door if they do not cover the old lock prep area. Second is you will want to measure from the center line of the latch to the the bottom fastener on the handel so you will be aware of any changes in handle length there. Again worst case.. drill a new hole and putty-paint over the old one. I have seen many of these at the "big box" stores. And from memory I think you have the "Camelot" style of trim. The guts of the new ones look nothing like what you have either.

Thanks, Mark, we really appreciate the input. It's a metal door,so is putty still an option? None of the new locksets we checked would fit and we just bought this place 7 months ago. Still hoping for a replacement spring, although we're repainting the exterior next month. Thanks again for laying out our options.

JB weld or Bondo and some sand paper will work to cover anything cosmetic.
