You got it. I don't know if it is a definative test but if there are bubbles then you have Head Gasket Issues. In other words no false positives only false negatives.

It had to happen sooner or later. I'm going to show my ignorance. What is the significance of bubbles in the coolant overflow tank? I'll assume this has to do with an HG issue? thanks again for all the help, brian.

Correct. I don't think you can really predict when a HG is going to fail, but they don't really have catastrophic failures. so if it is blown or in the process you will get exhaust in the coolant or coolant in the exhaust or both. The latter is much easier to see, it will steam/drip out of the tailpipe. The former will bubble out of the "expansion" tank(It is not really an overflow - the level rises and falls as the coolant is heated and cooled) since that is the only place it can go. I don't actually own an inferior 1fzfe anymore so maybe someone else can explain it better. The test as I know it is to rev up the engine to around 2k and hold it while watching the expansion tank(cap off but tube still inserted in the coolant).

FWIW my HG went in literally a minute... no signs.

....and it was my truck for 2 weeks prior to this

Once it's gone... it won't turn the crank due to water on top of the pistons and you can "blow" your engine by trying to crank it when blown... bend stuff, etc...

that's how my 4runner went, started smoking on the highway, pulled over in the middle of red mtn. and coolant was boiling out of it. I didn't think the later motors failed like that, I thought it was a more gradual failure. yours wasn't bubbling before that?

didn't have time... it guzzled a quart per 100 miles....

1997 Toyota Land Cruiser

guy said he was selling it for a friend whose wife was the driver and she bought a sequoia. has lockers, no rear seat and grey interior.

1997 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER COLLECTOR EDITION

talked to this guy Sat am. said it was a 2 owner vehicle and the last owners were some older folks who used it as a commuter and traded it for a rav4. he send me some pics. undercarriage looks clean with no rust. grey interior with lockers and the 3rd row seat. he said their ***dealer fees*** would total about $600. I told him i would pay 9K total. they declined. i really like the blue/grey combo and its a clean rig.

i'll probably drive down tomorrow to look at the green one in mcalla as its so close by. they are closed tomorrow so i can only crawl around the outside.

here's a few pics of the CE in georgia

that is CLEAN

Oh BTW... you're really helping me in my struggle right now finding all these clean 80's... I towed the tC back with the 3FE and I'm convinced that I could find a very clean 95-97 with low miles... do a 4.56 gear upgrade (maybe 4.88's with 32's) and be able to tow my FJTOY once it's done...
The 3FE got BETTER gas mileage towing on that trip than my previous three 80's...
The early hunnerd series had the exact tranny than did the later 80's: A343

went and saw the one in McCalla today. was really disappointed. for what they were asking and what the guy told me, i was expecting CHERRY!!!. inside was a real dissapointment. couldn't get in but just window shopping showed wear well beyond what the guy on the phone described. i also don't see the lockers switch on the dash either.

on the phone he told me it had lockers, had grey interior, and didn't have the 3rd row seat. he also told me it was the cleanest 80 he'd ever sold. he was wrong on all accounts.

the front axle was dry, but the bell housing and the transmission pan were covered in wetness. there was even a "hanging drop" about to fall off the transmission pan.

yuck. Laugh at him and move on... no point on wasting your time with him.

finally got an 80 in my driveway. bought the one in marietta at the dealership. got a new radiator, front brakes and an ok trade on my car. thanks for all the help. now i guess the real work begins.

PICS!

no pics yet. after today, F/R diffs drained, t-case drained, and birfs packed with moly grease through the top holes. added scangauge II after relocating OBD port. it will clearly need a front axle rebuild as the diff oil was heavily tainted with signs of birf grease. it will have to wait till after summer as all my summer time off goes to the kids. i hated to drain the rear diff as the fluid looked perfect and recently done. oh well, at least i caught the need for a crush washer on the rear fill plug that was missing. thankfully, there is a lexus dealer near my house.

i'll post some pics soon. i had bit of an issue with the radio being locked. if any of you need the unlock sequence, let me know. thanks, brian.
