I already posted in the classifieds and I only got 1 local response. I was wondering if any of you knew of any "diamonds in the rough" locally that may not be officially listed. basically, i'm looking for a 95-97 80 in good shape to be my DD and for some off road towing. lockers preferred but not mandatory. i'm basically at the cash in hand stage waiting for the right vehicle at the right price. thanks, brian (in birmingham).

I don't know of any at the moment but will keep a eye out for one.

thanks. so far it looks like hotlanta is going to be my best bet. there are a few over there that are possibilities. brian.

offroad towing? do tell...

not very exciting. there is a small boat launch that i have access to. it is really more like a dirt path to the water. problem is that is is fairly steep and off camber with a slick flat rock on one side. i've done it before with a 2WD, but its always an exercise in picking the right amount of wheelspin with just an empty trailer. i wouldn't even try and pull the loaded trailer (~3500lbs) out with my current vehicle. i borrowed a friends 100 series last year and it walked out like a billy goat even with a loaded waterlogged trailer.

i figure as long as i'm gonna buy a 4WD, i might as well get one i really like.

i've looked at this one online. i didn't realize he was a member here. any thoughts?

seems a little high to me, but he is a dealer. If I was in the market for another 80, I would look primarily in the classifieds on this site. look for the maintenance that has been done: PHH, maybe headgasket, front axle/birfs. None of these are really that hard to do, but someone who has done them already has probably maintained the truck with more attention to detail than a soccer mom in Atlanta who has taken the truck to jiffy lube every 3k. Mileage is not as important as maintenance history. People lose their minds over trucks with less than 100K, but I woudl take a well maintained truck with 180k over a truck with 80k and no maintenance history any day. Look at the recent blackstone thread uabericm posted up. His truck is the perfect example of a well maintained 80 imop, because he took his time and found a good truck that had a couple of previous owners who were members of this site.

... and then take "Scallywag" as the opposite... it did come from Atlanta and was rode hard and put up wet. Had original owners that did exactly what Matt desrcibes as bad PO's... It's taken 3+ years to correct quite a bit of stuff (Cory bought it first and we fixed alot with him owning it)... and it still gulps oil that no one can explain... due to that... it's being put out to pasture and becoming a trail-only rig.
So if you plan on driving this rig as a DD... then the good stuff must check out... afterall, your searching for a vehicle that will be no younger than 14 years...

My favorite color... That truck looks NICE. Roy is an awesome guy too. Too bad he wants too much for it...

ONLY if it's exactly what you want would i give that much for it. For that price, the EGR system would have to be spic-n-span clean as well as a new HG.... period. The newer style HG's will last a long time. The original, if it's still in there, will go as soon as you buy it... trust me.

Make sure that surface rust is just that... surface...

I'm embarrased to say how much I paid for my 91 that is being picked up today and getting next Saturday.

Those wheels look too perfect... have they been hit with a rattle can? Atleast the center caps have.

Whew... hate to keep nitpicking here but every bolt i see is rusty... not ideal.

I like this truck though... aside form the above stated it sure is slick... I'm partial to the navy blue though... not many of them around.

LandSpeeder, would you mind looking at the blue 80 thread again? He added some pics of the underside. I'm considering going to look at this vehicle this week. I really like the blue as well. I agree, the wheels look funny, he said he spray painted them. Any thoughts on what I should offer if it checks out in person? Thanks. brian.

The rust has been painted over on the underside and appears that it now even has 'wheel shine' on the axles. The giveaway is the tailgates bolts as well as the door jam bolts are rusted bad, so that means alot is rusted.
The driver seat does appear to be in good shape, so it does appear to be kept well.
I'd almost look at that 100 they got there for $1000 more though...

sorry to be ignorant, but what is 'wheel shine'. thanks, brian.

armor-all... or the ones that last for days.

he just posted another picture of the front end pre-cleaning/painting. steering stabilizer looks pretty rusted. i guess i'll pass. i've had enough headaches with corroded jet skis. i don't really want to repeat that with a car. thanks for the help so far. brian.

That truck is running alot of non-oem stuff you don't want anyway. The air box has been removed in leui of some aftermarket filter... only issue is it sits right over the exhaust manifold = HOT air whereas the stock box pulled air from in side the fender = colder air. aftermarket dizzy cap and plug wires... eek as well as a new MasterCylinder... wonder why it needed a completely new MC. And typically only comes without the reservoir so assuming it's not OEM as well...
I could be wrong but these are all things to check if you were to look at it in person.

roy added a new post and stated the rust was "very minor". i keep coming back to look at this rig online. it certainly has some plusses.

you stated earlier that roy was a good guy. thats carries alot of weight since you have nothing to gain from him selling a car. i'm intrigued by his "warranty". i sent an email asking what would the warranty do if the HG blew. haven't heard back yet. although any warranty is better than no warranty. i do like the blue color. the green/gray combo is my favorite, but the blue isn't far behind.

the air intake doesn't bother me so much as i figure i could find a used stock unit fairly easily. i too was wondering about the MC. I figured the plug wires, etc., were just part of the tune up.

anyway thanks for all your comments. i'll throw in a big War Eagle to Land Speeder. I used to live in good ol' Opelika.

Just don't let him take you for a test drive:

Why wouldn't the warranty cover the HG? those limited Warranties from any used car dealer always scares me.. and i never take them if I'm paying more. I'd rather have $1k off the price than that crappy warranty.
NOW - if it does cover the HG no questions asked with the OEM scrub kit... then it becomes worth $2K in my opinion and that truck is a STEAL....

I'm not sure how much TJ wanted for his but I have driven it and the thing is perfect.

I talked to TJ. His 80 sounds great. Couldn't meet on price. Would love to have it though. Sounds like he's done all the right stuff.
