Hello All,

I just recently bought a 2006 uzj100 LC and my wife loves it, but wants one a little newer than mine and the new body style....:princess:

Anyways, I also really respect and appreciate the engineering of these fine vehicles, so how could I argue?

Are there any known failure points or problems that seem to occur with the 2008 models?

I have found one somewhat locally with 75k miles and we may get it for her.

Thanks in advance

I have a 2008 with 98,000 miles. I've had zero issues.

Some VINs have the thunk/clunk. Mine did but was fixed. New bell housing on drive line, still under 60k miles at the time so covered on warranty. The sending unit for the gas gauges went out at about 80,000 and cost me about $600 and some headache. 102k on the ticker now and that's about it. Sweet ride. Use Carmax.com to track down some good finds, my take a few months though for one to pop up.

Overall, it looks like the 200 is pretty darn reliable, at least based on threads here.

As noted above, the drive shaft clunk is common on the earlier vehicles. There also tends to be a few complaints about brakes being weak. But that is a very easy fix.

Some outlier issues have been fuel senders and heater blower motors but those appear to be few-and-far between.

I just had to list my 2008 or sale, regrettably, because it's about 1/2" to tall for the garage of the house I just bought. I actually looked into have the garage floor lowered because I hate to sell it and don't want to leave it parked outside, but the cost was too high.

Here's a link to the listing - email me with any questions. It's an incredible truck - no issues.

Where in Ohio are you? Do you have maintenance history?

Uninstall the roof rack, lower the suspension slightly or sell the house.

Our land cruiser just barely fits and wont fit with the ski racks on. No OME lift for me. I always leave something in the garage so I can't pull in when returning from a ski trip.

Some chunk the water pump before 100k. Mine shows 68k and has started to leak past the seal and out the weep hole occasionally. Water pump is a known 5.7l issue according to tundra forums.

Test drove a salsa red 2008 yesterday with 99,xxx miles.

:-/

I don't know if we will get it or not. The Toyota dealership where it resides is a very small town dealer with almost zero Landcruiser experience. They sell one in a blue moon new, and they only custom order the ones they sell, never keeping one on the lot.

Here is my test drive experience:

The bad:

1. Lots of tire noise in the back, a little shaky at speed in the rear, very noticeable hot rubber smell from the rear tires when we got back from a test drive, and the tires are cupped in the rear. Will need replacement soon (EDIT: The tires are fine. After rotation and driving for less than 200 miles, the tires evened out and everything is perfect and within spec driving nice)
2. Oil pressure doesn't go but a little higher than 1/4 of the gauge, even at full throttle and 90mph(normal?) (EDIT: I wasn't watching the gauge well. It idles a little under 1/4 and it does go to almost 1/2 at full throttle)
3. Missing running board endcap on one side
4. Side Mirror housing had been messed up or gotten loosened somehow from the mount and has a slight back and forth shake driving down the road with the wind moving it back and forth (fixed by TSB repair at dealer)
5. It was cleaned/detailed by a lazy-azz who left kid crumbs everywhere in the back seats and what looked like spilled cola in the cooler bottom, dust everywhere.
6. The drivers side seat heater button won't click and stay down
7. The windshield was newly replaced, but the drivers side trim wasn't reattached properly and flopped around on our drive. It seemed to pop down good when our salesman looked at it. (edit: still pops loose, so we bought a new piece of trim to replace it)

The good:

1. It rode nice besides tire noise - No problem after a few miles now
2. It has lots of power
3. It is priced fairly
4. They will pay for/ fix everything that we found wrong
5. It is only 70 miles away
6. It has a new battery, new windshield, new accessory belt, new wipers, new air filter , new oil and filter change, new cabin air filter

I think I should buy a warranty if we get it, but I don't know what kind....

As far as the dealer not keeping one in stock, that's not unusual. I am in the Charlotte, NC area and the dealer I bought my '13 form had one in stock, but that is unusual even for here. With only about 5000 sold in the US annually, it is likely that most dealers do not sell many, much less stock these rigs.

The hot rubber smell in your first point would be concerning. I'd want to see the specs on a 4 wheel alignment to ensure nothing was bent in the rear end or to verify it is not crabbing a bit down he road.

Overall, you might consider waiting for another ....

I agree with elkaholic. The rear tires would be a big red flag for me. The wobbling side mirror is another common issue; there is a TSB for it that involves replacing the mounting bolts.

With the 200-series selling in such low numbers, you're probably going to have to travel a bit to get one. And with any car, buy the best example you can find; not the cheapest or closest.

Thanks for the info!

As for the rear tire smell, I found that the dealer had just rotated the tires from front to back and that would probably explain the issue.... They hadn't wore the tires in at all after rotating them. They were likely not rotated on a normal schedule.

As for the alignment, I would have agreed on that worry, but, after seeing the rear tires were cupped and just freshly swapped/rotated to the rear, and the vehicle drove straight and correctly, I think the lack of rotation maintenance was the issue.

I am really on the fence about this...

It is a really nice vehicle that just needs some TLC from the dealership before the right buyer comes along. That may very we'll be me still.

As for aftermarket warranties, are there any that are worth the money?

The oil pressure gauge is normally at that level.

Is it always at 1/4?

This one idles warm at a little below 1/4, then runs at 1/4 or a hair above

Even at full throttle? Or Is the sending unit very slow to respond to Rpm changes?

My 2006 LC runs at 1/4 but goes up to almost 1/2 at 3,000 rpm and above

My external temp gauge is quirky. Sometimes dead on other times way off. Need to look into it.

What all was replaced to fix the thunk/clunk?

Do You know what VINS are affected and need to be fixed?
