My 62 came with a SURCO Roof rack installed on the gutters. The SURCO site is down for renovations so I'm having trouble researching the load capacity.

I have a 50"x60" basket. I've never had a rack mounted on gutters before so I have no idea how much weight I can carry.

Does any one have a suggestion on how much weight I can safely load? The structural integrity of the rack and gutter look great.

Can I put a roof top tent on this rack?

Here's a pic.

Thanks,
Austin

Got any close-ups of the rack? Is there a solid bar running from left side gutter mounts to ride side gutter mounts? My concern for a roof tent would be having only two legs for the entire rack. But if they are beefy, it might not be a problem. Some people run a roof tent with two Yakima or Thule bars. The only other thing to consider is the railing of your rack. Are you going to chop it off so a tent sits flush?

I've got the same rack on my 60. Last week, playing hide-and-seek with the kids, I climbed up into it. I weigh about 155, and it held me w/o any problem. The drip rails seem sturdy enough, and the rack's cross beams seem sturdy enough, but the smaller ribs on the rack are a bit flimsy. I wouldn't think that it'd be a problem if there's a board across them or a solid floor to the tent to help distribute the load, but one man's weight on a single one of the ribs would definitely bend it.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for. I guess I'll have to look in to what kind of tent I want before I decide what to do about the rack.

I figure I can use it as is for now and then swap for a new rack if I need to in the future.

Do racks designed for tents mount on to the gutters?

Where in NY are you. I'm still trying to meet someone local.

I'll get a close up posted later so you can tell me what you think.

Thanks

No idea. I posted just to keep the thread alive, since I'd like to know the answer, too.

Nowhere near you; the truck's parked in Brewster. The PO, Dan, lives near Peekskill, but though I know he knows about IH8Mud, I haven't seen him online. (Not that Peekskill's local to you up there in the North Pole.)
