It's always something with the LC, I found this wire, and nothing else any help greatly appriciated. Also I didn't notice until I took the picture but whats with the oil on that hose. I can't go outside and look right now so if you know let me know.

The wire is supposed to be attched to a temp sensor mounted on the exhaust manifold. It controls the carb cooling fan.

The hose looks like it might be a power steering hose that's too long? The oil might be power steering fluid.

Thanks I will have to check it tomorow

This is going to sound stupid but why or what is the carb fan for any way, I will search for the answer but thought it would be easy to find here.

Actually, the fan is Toyotas early attempt at super charging the 2F engine.

In reality , becus the of all the smog stuff, many FJ40's etc would be hard to start after being driven hard and the under hood temp was high; then the gas would boil, or turn into vapor in the carb; therefore a quick fix with the carb fan.

...

The funny thing is that the fuel injected FJ62s retained the cooling fan after the carb was ditched. I've thought that the cooling fan helps reduce manifold warpage and cracks.

yep...it does. all the smog stuff also makes everything so hot under the hood that cracked manifolds were a big issue.

Which is why so many just remove all of the EGR stuff.

I think I have the same hanging wire. How does it attach to the manifold? My carb fan has never worked!

It attaches using this type of connector, see pic. Strip wire, splice more wire if needed(same guage); strip wire, crimp on connector; attach to sensor.

I was under the impression that the major source of heat was the exhaust warming up the cast iron manifold.

On FJ62's there is an injector cooling fan. Same reason. High underhood temps will boil fuel out of injector rail. FPR will allow excess pressure to bleed off and return to tank. when things are cooled down, the rail is empty and restarting is very difficult until the FP has shoved all the air out of the rail and injectors.

Injector cooling fans are a common solution to poorly engineered engine bays. Many Audi/VW/Porsche have them, and volvo's, as well as Nissan V6 engines in maxima and 300ZX. And 280ZX and 280 Z and....
