Hey Guys,
I’m brand new to the forum and looking for some advice on purchasing my first FZJ80. But first, a little background info. Last year I sold my 1999 Jeep Cherokee to buy a 2011 FJ Cruiser. The Jeep was a good vehicle that I bought from the original owner in Portland, OR. At the time I bought it my plans were to lift it, install steel bumpers, winch, etc., etc. But life got in the way and I sold it stock. I thought I wanted an FJ Cruiser, but the more I drive it the less I like it. Then I had an epiphany, and “discovered” the 80 series.
Here in the Northwest, there just are not any 93 to 97’s currently for sale. I’ve spent the past few weeks scouring eBay, Auto Trader, Car Guru’s and have come to the conclusion that I’ll have to go nationwide for my search. The few low mileage (by low mileage I mean <150k), good examples at reasonable prices I’ve found (a 96’ with E-lockers in SoCal with 140k and a 95 without E-lockers in in TX at an amazing 110k), get sold out from under me before I can even react.
I have my eye on some pristine examples on eBay at considerably higher prices. They’re both from the same seller (bought at auction). One is a 94’ with E-Lockers (144k) and the other is a 96’ without E-Lockers (180k). I’m torn between the two. Chances are I won’t need or use the lockers much at all. On the other hand I’m also of the opinion that it’s better to have them and not need them… The one without lockers is the 96’. I like the dash of the 95-97’s better, though not a deal breaker. What I REALLY like about the 96-97’s is the fact that they're OBDII compliant, have airbags, one piece headliner, etc. On the other hand (again), the 93-94’s have the beefier transmission, three row brass radiator, etc. (92’s are not a consideration as they have R12 AC systems, and 91's and 92's, well...).
Any thoughts or advice on the pros vs. cons to an FZJ80 newbie?
Thanks!
