Just picked up a '02 extended cab. With it up on the rack, wheels turn ever so slowly. RPM, gear choice, or 4 low doesnt make any difference. I have a chatter in the bellhousing, but not on the transmission case- well, other than just harmonics.

Pulled the pan down late last week, and its UGLY. Anyone in here know anything about these when it comes to rebuild as far as tips and tricks, recommended parts, or a good DIY rebuild vid?

Congrats on the taco! Being an 02 you should still have the mechanical kick down cable - if that's the case you can find a new transmission pretty easily and sometimes pretty cheap.

The FSM has some really in-depth details on rebuilding the transmission, I'd start there and buy a kit. I've disassembled one once for the output shaft and tail housing and probably could've rebuilt it if I had the right instructions and parts.

Thank you! Wasnt in the market at all, but it came up for sale through a friend of a friend for a price I couldnt pass up. Toyota did a recall on the frame recently, so its really clean underneath.

I picked up another one off of MP, but the build date is '98, and from what Ive read the valve bodies are different? As far as Ive found so far, it seems I need to find an '01-02. Of course in '03, seems they changed things up a little bit again. This is a totally extra truck, so Im not in any big hurry, and I have been starting to look at MP for rotted Sequias/Tundras and am kinda getting the V8 swap itch.... lol

I believe 02 was the last year of the mechanical kickdown cable, you can verify that by looking at the transmission and you'll see a giant cable coming off of it.

If yours doesn't have that and it is the electronic valve body trans you can use the one out of the 98 but you'll need to swap the valve bodies. It's actually pretty simple, there's a writeup about it on TacomaWorld somewhere.

Yes, its the kickdown style.

Took my 80 on a wheeling trip this weekend and had a close call of going over backwards, so decided on the drive home to start another build so when that day comes, Im kinda, sorta, ahead of the game.

Picking up its new heart on Thursday, and then start pulling it apart.
