Anyone in Raleigh have FJ45 that I can take a look at? I sold mine 5 years ago and want to buy another. Would like to take a look at head room, legroom and take a few measurements for drivetrain and oil pan clearance. I don't need to drive it, just give it a look over.

Max, 20 minutes time.

Thanks

A little out of the area, but have one.

I live in the Charlotte area. As mentioned above, there are at least two others closer to you.

Cheers,

Im under 2hrs from Raleigh in Greensboro NC and frequently in the capitol area with the 45 for work. Maybe i could meet you at next months mtg at the tap room or stay on short notice call. Feel free to come this way if needed but theres still one or two maybe closer.

Theres is a couple of 45s around the RSI area I'm sure one of the guys will chime in. Paging Jason or Jerry.

meaty meaty meaty...... he said Raleigh not Panama.

Seriously can we get this guy a jitterbug? and a grammar tutor :D

They are alot easier to find in panama though; but the ones I looked at had patches on their frame patches

I imagine you havent gotten taller in 5 years :D
6' kinda seems to be the limit for most folks. Not any or much room to slide the seat back.
Mine is already back to rubbing on the cab and is rather upright. Luckily I dig the granny setup.
I have plenty of headroom above, plenty of windshield to see out of too but your short in space behind and lets just say in 1st its possible to pop your noggin on the back glass. Plus at that height you usually have the legs to go with it that make it b/w uncomfortable and impossible

Im 5'11 and wear a 30/32 length pant. Stock 45 seats (never realized they are 2'' shorter than 40 seats till i bought a sweet set that were too big) and drive it rather comfortably for what it is. The steering wheel shouldnt be an issue for legs as mine is awkwardly high enough to not be able to touch the ground and steer/hold with knees. However a belly could make things tight ;) I do put 10k miles a year on it and my biggest complaint as far as comfort/ergonomics is that long drives my shin/ankle gets sore from having my toe cocked up holding the gas for longer drives 2+ hrs mostly. HTH

maybe i can get ya some measurements as well if it helps-- body and frame are stock ish

The big belly comment hits close to home:D... but I have lost 45 pounds since I sold mine. I'm 6 foot and 220 right now. My friend Mark A. is like 6.4 and fits in his but he is tall and lanky.

Thanks, let me know when your going to be around. I just want to see if it's as small as I remember. After I sold mine, a friend bought a 78 HJ45 with newer style seats and it was much roomier. Makes me think that maybe my 45 had 40 seats in it... I remember Mark Algazy's seeming roomier than mine too. Dang, I think I had 40 seats in mine and did not know it until I read your post. Glad I posted this!

Measurements for drivetrain clearance? What are you thinking John, a diesel swap?

Looking forward to hearing what you come up with :D

Seeing the 4BT in Moonshine gets me thinking about doing one of my own or maybe a B3.3T. I have seen a few 4BT's with the Allison at542N 4 speed auto and was thinking about maybe doing a divorced case or trying to find an adapter. TH475 would be a lot easier though as a NP205 would bolt on with factory adapters. I still have to sell my house and move down here before I start a project.

I also just want to check out legroom. I saw Bob Bascom's 45 a few weeks ago but did not have a long time to check it out. Might stop and see it on my way home this weekend.

I like your plan! Martin and I have got some good Cummins knowledge if you plan to do that. Are you hard pressed on doing an auto?

I don't think I've seen a 4BT 45 before :grinpimp:

Make sure to let us know if you need help moving down!

Yea, it's gotta be an auto. Bad left knee. That's the other reason I want to sit in one again.

I think it was Eco-Offroad that did a nice one. A light blue SWB.

eco did a nice swb like Jim said. Thought it was the cummins 3.3 but not sure

just so you can cry along with me I was second to offer full asking price for this one about a month ago , but second wasnt good enough :crybaby::crybaby::crybaby: $4500

that one had a performance built 4l80e

Scott at Eco Off Road used a B3.3T in his 45... I am impressed with that build. He did a great job.

Eco uses mainly B3.3

It seems to be their go to engine because they are mainly cheaper than 4BT's, quieter, much less vibes, get awesome MPG and can still make fairly good power while having good parts to source.

I've have thought about that engine for the 80 as the 4BT sans a full tear down and blue printing the motor is just a little violent for the long haul beast I want the 80 to be.

Why do you think the 4BT is 'violent'? How many 4BT trucks have you ridden in / driven that felt 'violent'? What was their mount setup?

With fluid filled mounts and a harmonic balancer the vibes aren't more than with my 2F. At highway speeds, I think that this motor is smoother than my 2F.

How many 4bt trucks have I driven in....... 10-15 most likely of all different varieties from 1 tons trucks to jeeps to broncos.

Maybe violent was a strong word but they are louder and have harsher vibes that a 6bt by far.

There is a reason the nickname for the 4bt has always been "the paint shaker"

The best one I ever drove in was a balanced and blueprinted one on Bio, fluid filled mounts and was pushing about 600 ft/lbs. That was in an old Gen I bronco.

the 2 rigs i've driven in with b3.3's is like comparing a lexus motor to an old V8.

A 4bt is ok and it depends on what you like. Not knocking your's just stating why places like Eco offroad generally choose/push the B3.3 over the 4bt.

If this was just my DD, wheeling rig, or only had 2 seats like a 45 then a 4bt is a great choice.

I'm trying to get the 80 back to a multi purpose rig I can load 6 people in to and drive 3 days into no where in like I used to do with it. So for me the smoother engine is the no brainer for passenger comfort. A B3.3 is smoother by a mile and can make all the power i'd want in the 80

anyway this is getting way off topic from the OP's question

the b3.3 and 4bt are completely different animals. I have both. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want a 4bt in anything they would drive regularly

I can and I would but like I said to me the wife factor and passenger factor will play heavily ons decision for me in my rig. I'm not new to loud rigs... One of my dd in high school was a rat motored Chevy with a 600 lift cam, open exhaust, and 513 gears. The difference was the only people that were in it were my car buddies or girls I met at parties who loved the speed it produced enroute to the LA mountain over looks and then the car was silent for a good while :grinpimp:

Now if I change my mind on the ultimate 80 goal a 4bt would easiy be on the table for it again.
