Okay-Dokey, starting my Water Pump, Tensioner, V-Belt 147k R&R (Remove & Replace).

Kinda looking forward to it - haven't done ANY mechanical work on ANY of my LCs so I'm excited.

I'll post a write up and see if anybody salutes but, quick question: Re-use the drained pink antifreeze?

This is the obvious standard on all my Jeeps but there's no mention of it in the FSM and it's rather pedantic about so many other things.

Re-use or not?

(that pink crap is expensive!)

Thanks,
Patrick

How old is it? How hard is it to get rid of the old stuff?

Still... I say no way.

Ugggg.

This stuff is so toxic to the, well, everything.

I'll capture and take to Pep Boys or AutoZone - they take used oil and antifreeze.

And, while I'm there, grab a couple gallons of new pink stuff.

Anybody care to offer a suggestion for Asian Pink Antifreeze (that's sooo close to being inappropriate)?

I'm seeing:
- Toyota (of course)
- Valvoline
- "OEM" brand
- Zerex (LOTS of this one)
- Peak
- Prestone
- ...etc....

Thanks,
Patrick

I have used the Zerex stuff - it works fine so far as I can tell.

You have an expansive vehicle just fork out the $50 and buy toyota pink and forget it for the next 100,000 miles

Zerex Asian meets Toyota specs, but I used Toyota SLLC in both the 100 and 200 series. As was posted, the stuff, like any ethylene glycol product, is toxic as hell to both animals and humans. Death takes a while, and is supposedly painful beyond hell as crystals form in the kidneys. Humans can be saved in the hospital, assuming they get to one, with an ethanol / saline drip...you're drunk as hell as the alcohol dissolves the crystals.

With 2 herding dogs and half a dozen barn cats, I'm beyond fastidious when I drain and replace coolant, drops that miss drip trays are taken care of with straight simple green and a lot of water. It all gets dumped off at the local Jiffy Lube.

Biggest PITA... nobody around here takes it. I have to stockpile it then I get one day a year when all the towns do a "Hazardous Waste" collection day, usually in May. Sit in line for 2-3 hours. No wonder people just pour it down the drain or out on the ground.

All VERY good points:
- Stick with Toyota Pink
- Treat every evacuated drop like poison and act accordingly.

Thanks everyone, Removal begins in the morning.

How hard can it be - Step 1, Remove Engine....
