I recently did an antenna repair on my 96 FZJ80.
I came here to try to get some advice and got a lot. I did not find anything on my specific model so I thought I would spread the genious a little.
Evidently there is a variety of fixes depending on a variety of factors such as year model, build date, etc.
1/96 is my build date and for that particular 80 Toyota sells you a mast only.
(no plastic cable) Unless you go to the dealer in Weatherford, Texas. In this case they will sell you the wrong one first, thus costing you much
and important
time and money. You will then return the wrong mast and explain to the
parts guy that he is in fact the biggest
goober you have ever met this side of your
brother-in-law.
At the very bottom of the mast there is a tiny bolt that screws into the tiny nut on the end of the plastic cable.
Here's the procedure:
Take the antenna nut off with a pair of needle nose pliers.
Have your buddy, wife, GF, concubine, or child operate the up and down button from inside. Careful not to over estimate their intent on actually helping you.
This mis managed expectation will surely frustrate you when that person honks the horn, or raises the broken mast right out of your hand and scratches the fender.
(please note that while scraches caused by tree branches and debris off road are acceptable, those caused by
non-cruiser owners are not)
When partner raises antenna far enough for you to get pliers on the very end of the cable, have them stop and go get you a
.
Remove broken antenna that the
at the car wash broke, and screw the new one on.
Stop and drink the
before it looses cool.
Have partner GENTLY lower antenna till firmly in place and then have them go get you another
.
While said helper is gone replace the antenna nut, and the job is almost done.
When helper returns with cold
, make yourself comfortable just outside the RF window and drink
while helper selects your favorite station.
Bask in the glory of having your tunes back and saving 2 hours of dealer labor charges, shop supplies rip off, and the aggrivation of dealing with a manly-girl or girly man service writer who really knows nothing about cruisers in the first place.
Now you are done, so go cruisin.
